Fall 2010 You could tell them (future campers) that you can still have fun by learning about God and He teaches you things throughout the week. He introduces you to new people who can help you through the tough time. Never be too shy to ask questions. He will teach you that these people are not only your friends but your family and that we all care about one another and stay in contact all year even though we only see each other once for a week and once for a weekend. — Roxanne (camper) Camp is fun and you should come join us and have fun with all of us there. — Jessica (camper) Camp: the dictionary describes it as this is “a place where tents, huts, or other temporary shelters are set up, as by soldiers, nomads, or travelers." Our camp is set up by followers of the true God, looking to better understand the reason. He has given his Son for us, and ivhy we were put here and how to make better use of our time to serve him. I took camp as a blessing in disguise this year. I took it for everything it was and listened to what everyone had to say, and now I have read the Bible every night starting at Proverbs chapter 24, verse one. I will continue to read the Bible over and over, Kathy said that a great way to start reading the Bible for new Bible readers, (IE myself) was to start reading Proverbs because you can read it anytime of the month and it will have a chapter for each day of the month. — Gabe (camper) A lot of Jesus, friends, growing, laughing, learning, fun and chicken paprikas:) ■— Gretchen (counselor) My favorite week out of the year. — Ashlea (counselor in training and former camper) It’s a place where it feels like God is more present in people and things all around. It’s really indescribable. I have absolutely loved camp every year I’ve gone. Everyone is always fun, kind and caring. — Matthew (camper) A great place to make new friends and not be judged while connecting more with God in the process. — Alexis (camper) HRFA Summer Camp Support Recipients Patrick Northcraft During the week of June 14, 2010,1 volunteered to be a “Crew Leader” at the annual Saint Barbara’s Parish Summer Bible Camp in which my peers and I learned a great deal regarding Our Lord Jesus Christ and his acts of charity and mercy. I also learned the skills of how to lead and teach the youth of today and how to adapt to the various needs of the children under my care. During Bible Camp, I had to learn and adapt to seeing the miracles of God through a child’s eyes in order to relate to them and help them learn. Doing this revealed a whole new understanding of my God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and how they should be interpreted as one Holy Trinity, not as separate deities. The camp also tested my leadership abilities. I had to attempt to teach the children respect, but it had to be taught a completely different way. As little children do not normally understand the concept of respect, I had to try to teach it to them in fun ways that would end in success. The whole camp was a learning experience for me and my pupils which extended our knowledge about God, Jesus, the Holy Ghost and our fellow humans. Teresa and Patrick Northcraft, working Church at the St. Barbara’s Festival on July 16-17, 2010 During the evenings of July 16 and 17, 2010,1 volunteered to work at the annual St. Barbara’s Parish Church Festival which raises money for church activities and helps the community grow in their Christian beliefs. The event was an exciting and entertaining experience which benefited the church and unified the community under a common goal. The area in which I volunteered generated over $400; the whole event generated at least $2000 for the church to spend on youth groups, upkeep and community projects. Teresa Northcraft This summer, I had the pleasure of helping Saint Barbara’s Catholic Church by assisting in their Vacation Bible School program. I was a volunteer music instructor so I guided the youth to sing praises to our Lord Jesus Christ. Our songs taught about Jesus’ love, his compassion, and his saving us. Each day, my fellow music instructors and I would stand in front of everyone and guide the songs. The children had a blast, and so did I. Throughout the week, it was interesting to see the children loosening up and dancing with the music. Dancing and singing, we were worshiping God and having fun at the same time. I plan on helping with the church activities again next year. In addition to helping out at the Vacation Bible School, I worked at the church’s festival. We ran the “Krazy Kanz” booth, and the point of the game was to knock the cans off the table which meant a lot of picking up hacky sacks and cans. All money from the different booths will benefit the parish. For two evenings, we sweated in the sweltering heat but it was worth it in the end. The church made a lot of money from that festival, and the people there had fun too. 22
