Kathy Smith Fall 2010 Bible is the Book for Me From Genesis to Revelation: His Truth Revealed The Bible Camp group in Ligonier, PA he Hungarian Reformed Church Youth Camp theme this year was the Bible. That’s the Book for me! We have always based our camp on verses from the Bible, but this year we dedicated the entire week to God’s Word and the importance for the Christian to love it and need it. Camp began on Sunday July 18, 2010 with registration, some mixer games to get us all acquainted or reacquainted. Then we watched our Keynote Movie, “Facing the Giants.” Each day of camp focused on an aspect of God’s Word. Monday was the Bible as a History Book, Tuesday was the Bible as an Instruction Manual, Wednesday the Bible could be a Road Map, Thursday, the Bible as a Love Letter, and Friday, the Living Word: Jesus. Attendance this year was about 54, with 29 campers, 13 counselors, 3 clergy and 3 little ones. This year, we instituted some changes. One was that the campers moved from the motel to the lodge. The primary reason for that change was to take advantage of the lodge’s kitchen. Last year, the counselors took on the extra work to cook 3 meals in order to keep the camp costs low, and the cooking had to be done outdoors. This year, we took on the same task, but we now had the convenience of the lodge’s kitchen. The lodge did not have air-conditioning which made it a bit uncomfortable. When we made these plans, we never thought we would have the hottest week of camp in years, but the guys were troopers and made the best of things. The lodge did have a big open common area where we ate together which actually solidified our “family” atmosphere. Our meals included spaghetti and meatballs, goulash and chicken soup with cheese quesadillas. During the middle of camp week, we were blessed with a delicious meal of chicken paprikas. We had wonderful speakers every morning of the week. The speakers instructed on each day’s topic, and they were: Jim Paul and Patrick Myers from Ligonier Conference Center and Camps; David Kohout from Talk Is Cheap; Pastor Walt Goss, Contemporary Pastor at the Trenton Hungarian Reformed Church; and Rev. Judit Mayer, a camp counselor and pastor of the Washington, DC Hungarian Reformed Church. As in previous years, we also had four different Bible Studies that all of the campers attended in rotation. This year, our studies focused on Prayer, Faith, Esther and Josiah. Bible Study leaders were Gretchen Sutto, Kristina Sorfozo, Barb Watkins and Kathy Smith. Again as in previous years, we held a “Team Challenge.” The campers and counselors separated into five teams and competed against each other every afternoon. On Monday, each team was assigned a letter that corresponded with one day’s theme. The teams made posters that stated the importance of a particular aspect of the Bible in spreading God’s Word. The teams also built boats for a boat race for Friday. The team boats held their missionary. “Flat Stanley” (an outlined paper doll) rode down the camp creek and over the water-fall. Tuesday was a scavenger hunt to find the Books of the Bible and put them in order. Wednesday 20
