CHRISTMAS GREETINGS HUNGARIAN REFORMED CHURCH IN AMERICA AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUS EGYHÁZ CHRISTMAS GREETING Dear brothers and sisters who are waiting for the gift of life. Yes, He is coming. He is coming into our cities and villages and our societies and organizations and our churches and also in our families and our lives. We are waiting for Him. Christmas is a great Christian festivity, and the family is the center of Christian life. When the Wise Men and the shepherds came to Bethlehem, they saw a family: a mother, a father, and a child. As we are fulfilling our duties as organizations or churches we are a big family. We have to know that Christmas must begin in the family or it doesn’t begin at all. A family is the most closely knit group of any for its members are constantly together day in and day out. Christmas in the family is marked by a home which is a place for the renewal of inner life. A home ought to be a place to which we long to come when the day’s work is done. It ought to be a place for rebuilding the inner strength which the world conspires to take away. Christmas in the family is also marked by a home which is a place of respect. There should be respect for one another because all are children of God. Christmas in the family is also marked by a home which is a place of reverence toward God. The reverence, or lack of it, shown in a home is made evident in the children. Is there a spirit of reverence in our homes-reverence toward God’s word in the Bible, toward God’s will as found in the teachings of Christ? Is there a spirit of reverence in ourselves toward God’s self-disclosure as found in the person of Christ and toward the Church as the body of Christ? If so, parents can feel that they have given their children a heritage that nothing can take away. This theme may not seem very appropriate for December 25 for it does not suggest much about the Holy Infant or the manger where Jesus lay down. But later, Jesus grew in a home which was a place to receive and renew inner life, which was a place of respect for one another, and which was a place of reverence toward God. Let these great Christmas blessings mark our homes each day of the year. On behalf of the elders, pastors, and members of the congregations of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America, I pray for the continuous work and service of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America for the families in Christ. KARÁCSONYI ÜDVÖZLETE Kedves testvérek, az Amerikai Magyar Református Egyesület vezetői, tagjai! Karácsonyra várunk, ami minden évben egy kicsit kiteljesíti az életünket. Ha nem lenne ez az ünnep, talán nem is tudnánk nélküle élni, mert annyira megszoktuk, hogy jön minden év decemberében. Azért, mert kibeszélhetetlenül nagy szükségünk van rá. Nem is a karácsonyra, hanem arra a valakire van szükségünk, akit Istentől kapunk ebben az ünnepben. Jézusra van szüksége az egész világnak. Karácsony arra tanít meg leginkább, hogy nem az az igazán fontos amit mi adunk, hanem inkább az, amit mi kapunk. Amikor a bölcsek eljöttek a szent családtól, bizonyára elfelejtették, hogy ők milyen ajándékokat adtak Jézusnak azon az első karácsony éjszakán, de azt azonban mégsem felejtették el, hogy megláthatták a Megváltót! Nekünk sem szabad azt néznünk, hogy mit adtunk, hanem azt, hogy mit kaptunk! Nem anyagiakban, hanem lelkiekben. Meg kell látnunk azt, hogy a másik ember is gondolt rám, hogy szeretetét megmutatta, hogy Isten adta őt nekem, és ez abban jut kifejezésre, hogy velem van, reám van bízva, felelős vagyok érte. Könnyebb és jelentőségteljesebb lenne az életünk, ha arra figyelnénk, hogy minden mögött Isten akarata és szeretete húzódik meg. A karácsony beszél erről leginkább. Ebben az ünnepben Isten egy nagy családdá tesz minket, azért küldi el a szent Fiát Jézust, hogy „az Ő házanépe legyünk”. A karácsony erről a nagy családról beszél: testvérem a másik ember, felelős vagyok érte, szeretni kell a 10 WINTER 2008
