HRFA Honored by the Birmingham Ethnic Festival for Long Term Support August 20, 2006 Friends of the Neighborhood Award______________________________ The Birmingham Ethnic Festival has a long annual tradition of honoring an individual, organization or corporation who has provided exemplary support for our community. This year, we are pleased confer the 32nd Annual Friends of the Birmingham Community Award to the William Penn Association and Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. We have dedicated the 32nd Annual Birmingham Ethnic Festival the Hungarian Freedom Fighters of 1956, the refugees who found home in Birmingham, and the good people of our community who welcomed them to our neighborhood. The WPA and HRFA helped the refugees as well on the local level and national level. We feel it appropriate to honor two national institutions that not only helped the 56ers but have helped all Hungarians since their inceptions. Both institutions provide solid Life Insurance and Annuity products for investment, and keep Hungarian traditions alive and well in this country. The WPA and HRFA underwrite the cost of some of the entertainment during the Festival and have done so for years. The societies hold bowling and golf tournaments, summer picnics, language camps, Christmas parties, and other events that are attended by members and non-members of both societies. They have assisted in preserving the cultural history of our community by supporting the production of Abauj Bethlehem and The Urban Turf and Ethnic Soul films about our neighborhood. The Birmingham community is pleased to have the opportunity to recognize The William Penn Association and Hungarian Reformed Federation of America for their generous support of our neighborhood and sincerely appreciates their involvement in the Birmingham Ethnic Festival.
