Fedor from Br. 69 was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. His wife, Erika, and two daughters Silvia and Olivia, accompanied him along with the other 98 honorees and their families. Each honoree represents the very essence of the American way of life, contributing to our national identity while preserving distinct values and heritage. The Ellis Island Medals of Honor have been aptly named, for the Island is a symbol of the diversity of our nation's people who have come together to form a single mosaic of many cultures and ancestral backgrounds. The diversity that the United States stands for is a hope for so many still. The medal represents the accomplishments of the spirit, hard work and values of our ancestors and making the "American dream" a reality. Individuals are nominated by only those people that have received the award. Mr. Fedor was nominated by Thomas Hilbert. For more infonnation please see The National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, Inc. which sponsors the event, (www.neco.org) The pre-ceremonies took place at the Metropolitan Club in New York City, where the honorees of the award enjoyed a short cocktail and socialized before the big ceremony. Honorees ranged from diverse ethnic backgrounds and various professional fields, from all across the United States of America. The ceremony day’s events began with a ferry ride that took guests of the honorees from Battery Park to Ellis Island escorted by the Coast Guard, while the honorees came later and walked down the red carpet into the main tent on Ellis Island. All the branches of the military were present and saluted the honorees. Later, each honoree was called onto the stage, introduced by a short biography and presented their award. After the ceremony a grand dinner was set up in the Great Hall on Ellis Island. The tables were adorned with beautiful flowers and candles while live music was played above and two huge American flags were draped from the balconies. The Great Hall where so many immigrants passed through was now a place of celebration and
