Famous dishes can be found throughout the world. In the following issues of Fraternity- Testvériség, you will find some recipes submitted by our members. “AMBROSIA ESTHER” RECIPE by Cindy Torok I received this recipe many years ago from a dear woman, Esther, from my home church in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where she was an HRFA member of Branch 80. She would make it for the various covered dish dinners. I have taken her recipe one step farther by using fat free ingredients which do not change the great taste of this refreshing dessert. I have received many compliments on this dish which is especially good on a hot summer’s day. I’ve also served it to the HRFA Board so I guess you could say it’s “Board Approved!” Esther has since passed on, but her memory is alive in this recipe which is enjoyed by many. Hope you enjoy it too! “Ambrosia Esther” One pkg. 8 oz. fat free cream cheese One 20 oz. can crushed pineapple with juice One 8 oz. container fat free whipped topping 2 cups mini marshmallows One 11 oz. can mandarin orange segments, drained and sliced in half One 10 oz. jar maraschino cherries (no stems), drained and sliced in half Put cream cheese in large bowl and let soften as you drain/slice orange segments and cherries. Next, cream the cream cheese well. Add pineapple with juice. Break up any lumps of cream cheese. Add the whipped topping and marshmallows. Mix well. Add the drained orange segments and cherries. Save some cherries to decorate the top of the finished dessert. Mix well. Put in refrigerator to chill for 2-3 hours in order for the marshmallows to absorb the pineapple juice and whipped topping. This may be made a day ahead also. Some variations would include adding shredded coconut or chopped walnuts. Makes approx. 8 one cup servings. DAY TRIPPING in D.C. , APRIL 2004 By Cindy Torok Spring has arrived in our Nation’s Capital and along with it the directors of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America and their spouses for the Spring Board Meeting, April 19-21. My husband, President/CEO Rev. Stefan Torok, and I welcomed our guests to town with our Annual Open House on Sunday. It was so nice to visit with each other before the hectic pace of the week began. As the Board began their meeting Monday morning, a group of ladies gathered in the hotel lobby ready to set out on the itinerary that had been preplanned Left to right: Peggy Fabri, Sara Nagy, f°r their visit. This Margie Nicholas, Maria Kovács, Linda year we welcomed Martin, Kathy Megyeri (photo by Cindy among us Kathy Torok) Megyeri, wife of our new CFO, Mr. Leslie Megyeri. Kathy has lived in D.C. most of her life and was a great resource to me in planning our outings; plus she’s got a great sense of direction, thankfully, for the ladies and me! The weather on our first day out was filled with sunshine and blue skies as we headed to the Church and Franciscan Monastery of Mt. Sepulcher in the Northeast section of the District. This church is known for having replicas of the Holy Shrines of Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and Syria. Upon arriving, we were greeted by the beauty of the majestic gardens. Tulips of every color were in full bloom. We couldn’t pass up this Kodak moment! Many thanks to the poor soul who walked by whom we asked to take our group photo and then proceeded to hand him 3 cameras! Since we arrived early for the tour, we visited the Gift Shop. We did a good job of reducing their inventory on the sale table. There were many nice religious pins and necklaces. I found lovely pewter cross necklaces for my nieces. Peggy Fabri, wife of Director Joe Fabri, came across a “Comfort Cross.” It’s a security pillow which was in- Monastery Gardens: Linda sP'red by an 8 year old boy Martin, Margie Nicholas, who was having night- Peggy Fabri, Maria mares. As we wives are Kovács,Sara Nagy, Cindy always on the lookout for Torok and Kathy Megyeri projects, Peggy and Kathy
