OBITUARIES

Ida Julia (Tarczali) Bacsó 1913-2002

Ida Julia (Tarczali) Bacsó would have celebrated her 90th birthday if she had lived 6 more weeks. She was bom in Toledo, Ohio, on January 15, 1913 to Steve Tarczali and

Mary Bartók Tarczali. Her parents owned a dry goods store in the Tarczali Building directly across the street from the Hungarian Reformed Church (now known as Calvin United Church of Christ). Her family included an older sister—Irene Tarczali Nagy, a younger sister— Elizabeth Tarczali Bertok, and a younger brother—Steve Tarczali, Jr. who all preceded her in death. As a child and youth, Ida was always very involved in church activities. She attended Birmingham Elementary School and graduated from Toledo Waite High School in 1932. In 1935, she graduated from Women’s and Children’s Hospital School of Nursing (which then became Riverside Hospital).

Shortly after her graduation, Ida accepted a marriage proposal from Rev. Bela Paul Bacsó (a family friend) on their first date! After a brief engagement, they were married on October 26,1935 at the Toledo Hungarian Reformed Church. To this union, four daughters were born: Magdalene Ida Pullar; Rosalie Martha Gainer; Elizabeth Marie Bacsó; and Ida Ruth Hahn. Two weeks before Bela’s death in 1998, Bela and Ida had celebrated 63 loving years of marriage together. Throughout their active ministry, Bela and Ida were called to serve Hungarian churches in Elyria, Ohio; Gary, Indiana; and Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Ida never worked at a job outside the home. Instead, she was a dedicated “stay-at-home Mom” and minister’s wife. In this role, she attended every Ladies’ Guild Meeting and taught Sunday School and Bible School at the church. One of Ida’s greatest joys was teaching Hungarian dancing to the children and youth of the Fairport Harbor congregation.

Ida was the ultimate hostess! She delighted the palates of many dinner guests at the parsonage when she served her Hungarian specialties. After the meal, she filled containers with left-over delicacies to send home with her guests! Ida was a terrific sales person and was actively involved with the Elyria Community Concert Association. She cherished her bi-monthly meetings of the Order of Eastern Star in Elyria Chapter #165. She was a 50-year member during which time she held several offices. Bela and Ida were both members of the HRFA for 79 and 72 years respectively.

In 1996, Bela and Ida sold their home in Elyria and moved to Dearborn, Michigan, to live with daughter Elizabeth. When Bela became ill, Ida dedicated her life to caring for her dear husband. After Bela’s death, Liz’s Yorkshire Terrier, Buddyka, became Ida’s faithful companion during the last years of her life. In June of 2002, Ida slipped into the final stages of her Alzheimer’s Disease and needed the expert care given to her at the Elyria United Methodist Village. On December 2, 2002, Ida was bom into eternal life to once again be joined in that perfect union with her beloved Bela and her Heavenly Father.

Taba János 1921-2003

Először Camp Kilmerben találkoztam vele és családjával 1956 telén. Érkezése után egyenesen a tábori lelkészt kereste. Azért a lelkészt, mert olyan városban akarta amerikai életét elkezdeni, ahol van magyar református templom. Hozzám irányították, én pedig nyomban hívtam Abrahám Dezső barátomat, aki a közeli Perth Amboy-i gyülekezetnek volt a pásztora, és egy órán belül ott volt. Mindent megbeszéltek. Vasárnap már magyar gyülekezetben zengte szép tenor hangjával a szabadító Istent magasztaló zsoltárokat.

Második találkozásunk színhelye az első amerikai otthona, illetve egy kis étkezde, ahol gyári munkája mellett elkezdte a washingtoni Old Budapesthez vezető utat, a vendéglátó szakmát.

Harmadik találkozásunk helye a virginiai híres “Öreg Budapest”, a magyarok és amerikaiak kedvenc találkozó helye. Mindenkihez volt egy kedves szava, de vissza-vissza sietett házi zenekarához, melynek kíséretével estéről-estére valóságos kívánság hangversenyt adott.

Otthonát West Virginia-i birtokán, a Potomac partjára építette. Oda hívta barátait és az amerikai magyar élet vezetőit az emlékezetes összejövetelekre, az Amerikai Magyar Református Egyesület helyi osztályának testvérsegítő munkáját támogató disznótorokra. Ott született az Amerikai Magyar Szövetség egyik országos gyűlésén a híres Martinsburgi Egyezmény.

Negyedik találkozás az örökké emlékezetes Dunapatajon játszódott le, ahol Pflum Tiborral meglátogattuk közös barátunkat, s mint kiderült, az egész falu barátját, mentorát, virágzó üzletek tulajdonosát. Egy telefonjába került, és perceken belül együtt volt a falu vezetősége, a címzetes polgármester hívására.
