Page 4 TESTVÉRISÉG An Unbelievable Week in Ligonier In the mid-July heat, members of the Boards of Directors of both the Bethlen Home and the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America met in Ligonier. The subject of these two meetings was to enhance the work and effectiveness of these organizations. The first item of business was a joint meeting. During the two days, all those officially representing both organizations heard presentations by New Albany Capital Financial Group, which was hired by the Bethlen Home’s Board to secure financing for the construction project. The words were very encouraging. The second presentation was made Rev. Imre A. Bertalan opens the Golf Tournament with a prayer. by Mistick Construction officials. Finally, a presentation was made by Mr. James Cunningham on the particulars of the Capital Campaign. A separate meeting was arranged by him with the individual campaign heads to discuss strategies in their approach to secure donations or gifts. As was announced in the last issue of Fraternity, a Capital Campaign has been started to cover the approximate $3 million cost for furnishing and equipping the new nursing home. It is our hope that both Hungarians and other ethnic groups and individuals will offer their help and contributions so that our beloved Bethlen Home will be able to serve the glory of God and benefit all those who need its services. A new 11-minute video describing the project, (“Dawning of a New Day,”) is available to churches and organizations. If you are interested in obtaining this video or making a contribution, please call Pat Armel, Capital Campaign Coordinator at the Bethlen Home (724-238-6711). A groundbreaking ceremony for the construction took place on September 3. This groundbreaking coincided with the closing of the annual meetings of the Presbyters’ and Ministerial Association Conferences held in Ligonier on Labor Day. The second meeting was a special Board of Directors Meeting of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. The Board spent two full days on issues relating to sales and marketing, and on the Business Plan of the Federation, as well as compensation of agents. The various Board committees were also reorganized. This was a great opportunity for all Board members to spend time discussing various important issues. At the conclusion of the meeting, the members felt closer to each other and united in accomplishing the issues at hand. On Saturday, July 20, some of our Board members stayed for the Fourth Annual Bethlen Home/HRFA Golf Tournament held at Champion Lakes Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Before tee off time, the Rev. Imre A. Bertalan and the Rev. Stefan M. Torok conducted a short devotional service asking the Lord’s richest blessings on the tournament and on our honoree, Mr. Elmer E.(A1) Vargo, former Secretary of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. Mr. Vargo presently serves as Vice-Chair of the William Penn Association. He has given 35 years of dedicated service to both organizations and the American-Hungarian community. This year’s Golf Tournament saw the largest turnout of golfers ever. We had over 120 participants. Special thanks and appreciation is expressed to the organizing committee of Mr. Jim Szucs, Mr. John K. Morey, Mr. Joseph Fabri, Rev. Imre A. Bertalan, Mrs. Pat Armel, and Mrs. Teri Pflum. Special thanks go to the hole sponsors listed in this issue. Also, through the courtesy of Farabaugh Chevrolet- Oldsmobile of Ligonier, a brand new Chevrolet Trail Blazer was donated as a “hole-in-one” prize. The owner of the golf course, Mr. Dick Groat, said that no one had gotten a hole-in-one there in more than 30 years. Not until this day!!! We congratulate the proud winner, Mr. Steve Peipock, who had come to the tournament with a rented car because his vehicle had been demolished in a recent accident. During the Banquet that followed the tournament, recognition was given to our honoree, Mr. Elmer E. (AI) Vargo. On behalf of the Federation, the Rev. Stefan M. Torok, President, and Mr. George Dózsa, Chairman of Board, acknowledged the long and dedicated service of Mr. Vargo. On behalf of the William Penn Association, Mr. Anthony C. Beke, Chairman of Board, extended greetings to the honoree. The unbelievable week concluded on Sunday, August 21, with a Divine Worship Service of Thanksgiving. The little chapel at Mount Moriah was filled with worshippers not only from the Nursing Home and members of the Boards of Directors, but also from the neighboring conA group of dedicated volunteers at the Golf Tournament.
