Page 22 TESTVÉRISÉG Student Aid As one of its many fraternal benefits, the HRFA offers a one-time scholarship of $600 to our young members who are in pursuit of a college education. It is intended that these funds be applied towards the cost of tuition, fees, books, or room and board. All students who fulfill the following requirements may apply: 1. Must be a member of the Federation for at least five years immediately preceding date of application for scholarship. He or she must be a member in good standing, i.e., applicant’s policy reflects no arrears in dues, and policy is not lapsed, matured or surrendered. 2. Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate day student in an accredited four-year college or university. The scholarship is not available to first-year college students. It is only granted to those who are in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year and have earned good grades for the courses completed. 3. The applicant must contact his or her branch manager or the Home Office to receive an application form. Once the student completes the form, he or she should send it to the branch manager or the Home Office together with a transcript. The Home Office will review, approve and process the application and send the check to the applicant. We thank our Branch Managers for recommending these many fine young people for the Student Aid & Loan Fund of the HRFA, and for making them aware of this important benefit of our fraternal society. Kristina Orosz, member of Branch 227: “I am currently a sophomore chemistry major at Harvey Mudd College. Although few have heard of Mudd, it is a well-respected undergraduate science college, and I feel fortunate and am very grateful to be at that college. In addition to playing the piano and working as a secretary for the Music Department, I am also a thrower on the Claremont- Mudd-Scripps track team and hope to make it to nationals this year in the hammer throw. While at home, I act as the replacement organist for the Bosworth Road Presbyterian Church. In the summer, I volunteer my time to the Vacation Bible School. Last summer I worked as a research assistant. From the experience I have gained, I discovered that research is the direction that I want to pursue after college. Eventually I would like to attend graduate school and study chemistry further. I would like to thank the HRFA for considering my application, thus helping me to reach my goals.” Julianna Ilona Takacs, member of Branch 259: “It is hard to believe that in only a few months I’ll be graduating from college and on my way into the ‘real’ world. But I can assure you that the past four years have left me feeling fully prepared. I’m a senior at Purchase College in Westchester County, New York, a small art school located just outside of New York City. I’ll be graduating with a BFA in Visual Arts, having completed my interdisciplinary course of study within the Conservatory of Art and Design. Throughout my four years at school, I have also continued to work with the Greater Niagara Ballet Company located in Niagara Falls, New York. Also a piano student of fourteen years, I always knew my life would lead me to a career in the Arts. My only dilemma has been to finally choosing the path I want to take. Currently I am teaching art and dance classes to middle school children through the Northern Westchester Center for the Arts. I have actually gained a lot of teaching experience recently; including an internship I took in my junior year which allowed me to become a substitute teacher at a local elementary school. Also having taught ballet lessons since the age of sixteen, you might think my next step would be to receive my masters in education. Although I love teaching, especially to children, I am hopefully going to graduate school in Art Therapy in the near future. The last year has been filled with many wonderful experiences, including an extended visit to Hungary with my father and brother to visit our family in Nagykanizsa and in the Pecs area. Although I can’t visit as often as I would like to, it was wonderful to be back, and I am considering continuing my studies in Budapest, if there is a program available to me there. I also opened a consignment store on my school campus with a friend of mine last semester and have been busy acting as general manager to our rather successful venture. As graduation approaches, I have been working hard on my senior project: an installation based on the events of September 11th. I hope to continue pursuing my various interests and studies in the arts through the support of this generous gift from the HRFA. I’ve been incredibly blessed this far and aspire to give back for all that has been given to me. I thank Branch Manager Margaret H. Saltzer for my recommendation.” Julianna Ilona Takacs, daughter of László and Judith Takacs; and sister to John.
