I would like to thank our branch manager Marika Kovács, who makes the world’s best nut roll (beigli), for recommending me for this scholarship.” David Kish, member of St. George District, Metuchen, New Jersey Branch 501: “I am currently a junior at the University of Maryland located in College Park. There my focus of study is Decisions and Information Technology within the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Here I am preparing to be an effective user and manager of information technologies and systems in the current environment of the technology-enabled business firm. As an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, I have held the positions of Recording Secretary, Parent’s Day Chair, and In House/Out of House Relations Chair. This fraternal organization offers numerous leadership opportunities, community service, scholarship, and most importantly, lifelong friendships. I play all fraternity intramural sports, including softball, flag football, basketball, and volleyball. Furthermore, I am a participant in the Information Systems Society. Now, being 20 years of age, I have many decisions to make in the near future, which will have a major impact on my life. I have to take a position on what I want to do with my life when I leave the campus playground and enter the real world of work. I have to start thinking about graduate school and where I might want to attend, so I can set my goals early. These decisions are going to be difficult ones to make, but I know when I come face to face with them, I will make the right choices because of my past experiences and the great education I have been fortunate enough to obtain. I would like to thank the HRFA and Mrs. Margaret Pauli for recommending me and supporting the education of many.” Erin Radvansky, member of Ligonier, Pennsylvania Branch 197: “I am a sophomore at Grove City College which is located in Grove City, Pennsylvania. I am majoring in Psychology with an eye on becoming a Child Psychologist. When I was in high school, I did a work study program which involved working closely with elementary aged children and found it to be both challenging and rewarding. I also have served as a volunteer in the nursery at our church, Harvest Baptist Church, and enjoyed that as well. The academic standards at Grove City are very high and it requires a high level of determination and dedication. Last year, I achieved a place on what is called the “Deans List with Distinction” and I made the “Presidential Scholars” list for the first semester this year. I had a pleasant surprise during one of my elective courses this year. I decided to take a sculpture class, though I had never done anything like that before. My sculpture of a woman was chosen to be displayed in this year’s spring show! I am hoping to develop this “hidden” talent in the future. I am privileged to belong to the Pro-Life organization on campus known as the Life Advocates. We arrange to have speakers come to our school, organize an annual trip to Washington, D.C. for the March for Life, and raise awareness of the abortion issue on campus via flyers and posters. I spend what little free time I have reading and going to the movies with my friends. Thank you so much for this opportunity to share just a little bit of what’s going on in my life with you. The scholarship money is of tremendous help in furthering my education.” Scott Edward Whiteman, member of Cleveland, Ohio Branch 2: “I am currently a student at Ohio University, majoring in Multimedia in the School of Visual Communications. Since starting my college education there last year, I became involved in various activities around campus. One of these is with the Christian Group Navigators, designed for students to worship together, to express their struggles as Christian students, to pray and to receive a message. It is basically like a small church service. I am the Resident Assistant for my dormitory floor section, which can be a time-consuming responsibility, but it is a great way to meet people. Also, throughout my time at school I have enjoyed working on film scores, album covers, posters, and music production. I have also had the opportunity to work on an independent film this past summer. In my leisure time I enjoy playing basketball, watching movies and backpacking when I get the chance. Thank you for the scholarship.”
