FRATERNITY Page 17 The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 P.M. We look forward to organizing activities that will enhance the fraternal life of our members and friends in Western Pennsylvania. Peggy Fabri, Secretary 724-843-6162 Branch 182 - Flint, Michigan Join Hands Day Our project was to beautify our church, the Heritage Church, Davison, Michigan. It was planned in the Sunday school class of both our adults and youth. We chose this project taking into consideration the needs of the church community, which has a large elderly congregation. Youth and adults joined hands on June 16, 2001. On June 16,2001, the youth, under supervision of adult leaders, planted flowers around the church. It was strenuous, daylong and enjoyable. At the end of the day, the youth served a picnic and cleaned up afterwards. The youth were enthusiastic and plan to carry on the tradition and lead the next Join Hands Day project. Sara Nagy, Branch Manager 517-652-6312 Branch 300 - Washington, D.C. Music Stirs Hearts at the Nursing Home On Friday, June 22, Home Office employee Ralph Bohn gave a recital concert on piano accordion for elderly patients at Manor Care Nursing Home in Largo, Maryland. Sari Spevak, a good and old time friend of our branch, who works as a medical registrar in the home, heard Ralph play at our picnic and thought it would be a good idea to ask him to play on International Day, a multicultural potluck festivity at the home. Ralph gladly agreed. For a day, the home was filled with aromas of dishes yet unknown and the offices were turned into showcases resembling miniature folk museums of different nationalities. Sari’s office became a small Hungarian exhibit. After lunch, Ralph and his instrument were the center of all attention. He started to play and in no time the whole nursing home was accompanying him - each in his or her own way. “It was heartwarming to observe,” Ralph said, “how patients in wheelchairs perform dancing motions with their hands on wheelchair handles. Some patients were overcome with emotion when they heard tunes from their young days. It seems that the direct human-to-human contact is far more effective and therapeutic than any mechanical gadget provided in our times.” Thank you, Ralph, for providing much joy for a day at the home. Andrea and Terje tie the knot It is our pleasure to announce that our member and Home Office employee Andrea Bárok married Terje Treff on April 28, 2001. The beautiful ceremony took place in Baltimore, Maryland, among close family and friends. Special guests and family members came from Hungary, Norway, and Pennsylvania to attend this special event. The happy couple now resides in Alexandria, Virginia, close to Washington, D.C. We wish God’s richest blessings on Andrea and Terje. Fraternal Day Celebrated This year the annual Mother’s Day picnic of Branch 300, usually held in May, was postponed to a later date. This year our fraternal event was held on Saturday, June 9, 2001 together with the Hungarian Scouts of Washington, D.C. Someone must have whispered in our ears to wait with the picnic until June because the weather couldn’t have been worse in May. Come June 9, we were blessed with the most gorgeous weather - blue skies, not a single cloud in sight and no trace of humidity. This made people swarm to the Benedek Farm, landmark of all our picnics, for fellowship and good food. The menu this year consisted of gulyás leves (goulash soup), turoscsuza (cottage cheese noodles topped with bacon) and a large variety of pastries. The turoscsuza was prepared from scratch by Irenke Vallario and Teri Pflum for one hundred people. It was a lot of work to do all those noodles, but it paid off because they were gone in no time. The scouts, under the lively guidance of Krisztina Székely, presented a delightful program, enchanting young and old with their songs and dances. Ralph Bohn from the
