FRATERNITY Page 23 Rebekka Murrei, Member of Br.31: “I would like to thank the HRFA for this generous scholarship. As we all know, the cost of college education today is great, and I truly appreciate all of the help I receive. I would also like to thank our church, the Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ of Lorain, Ohio and our branch manager Emma I am currently a sophomore at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and I am working on a degree in both Mass Communication and Creative Writing. So far, I have found my studies to be very fulfilling, and I am very excited to continue my education here at Miami. While at Miami, I have been involved with several service projects, ASG (Assisted Student Government), and last year I held the positionof Communication Chairperson of our Hall Council. I am also a member of PRSSA, the Public Relations Student Sociey of America, and immediately following my junior year, I hope to study abroad in London, England. We have a program here at Miami that allows students studying Public Relations, Marketing and Graphic Design to live and work in London for six weeks in the summer through Laws Hall and Associates, a University owned advertising firm. I am currently working as a waitress to help pay for some of my expenses, and during Christmas and summer breaks, I work as a casher, sales clerk, and hostess at a local Cracker Barrel to offset the costs of books and whatnot. Besides working, while at home I continue to enjoy dancing with the Lorain Hungarian Reformed Dance Troupe, under the direction of Magda Koos, and I also sing in our church choir. Keeping my heritage and my faith alive is very important to me, and the HRFA is just one more organization that reminds me of who I am and what I am most proud of. Once again, I would just like to thank all of those who continue to help me realize my dreams, and 1 am eternally grateful to the Federation for this gift.” Melissa M. Pepin, Member of Br. 302: “I am presently a sophomore enrolled full-time at Rutgers University and have been a member of Branch 302 in New Brunswick, N.J. since I was a baby. I am a Visual Arts major and taking a minor in Hungarian. I made the Dean’s List during my spring 2000 semester. This spring I will finish my minor studies. I am currently taking a course in Social Change and Families in Hungary and an independent study concerning Hungarian artists of the 20th century. I hope to be able to put my minor studies to use and study at the university in Debrecen. My study of Hungarian has increased my awareness and appreciation of my Hungarian heritage, and I have benefitAros for their constant support. ted greatly from the use of reference materials at the offices of the American Hungarian Foundation in New Brunswick. I also eagerly anticipate the exhibit of Hungarian artists that the Foundation will have on display this spring. Thank you.” Melissa was recommended by Branch Manager Jerry Wyttenbach. Rita Szalas, Member of Br.182: “My name is Rita Szalas and I am nineteen years old. I live in Budapest. I am a second year student at Kodalányi János College. I am majoring in teaching English and communication. Communication includes studies in connection with journalism, electronic media and public relations. I’m really interested in public relations, but media is also an interesting field. I had a two-week practice last semester at a Hungarian TV channel, and I spent a few days at a local radio station at Székesfehérvár. At the end of the fourth year, I will receive two diplomas, one as an English teacher and the other as a communcations specialist. I haven’t decided yet what I am going to do after finishing school. I would however like to work in the media as a PR manager. I am very grateful that I had the chance to receive this scholarship. Thank you very much for supporting me.” Rita was recommended by Branch Manager Sara Nagy Branch 300 of Washington, D.C. and the Hungarian Scouts will hold their annual picnic at Camp Olympic (Benedek Farm) on Saturday, June 9,2001 12 -6 P.M.
