FRATERNITY Page 7 FROM LENT TO EASTER BÖJTBŐL HÚSVÉT FELÉ The Scripture account of the crucifixion of our Lord gives us such a solemn feeling that we seem to hold back our breath. There He hangs in agony upon His cross, our Lord Jesus Christ, giving His life for our salvation. His word through all the horrible torment was “Father.” Conscious of little else, the presence of His Father was foremost and strengthening. The very next word was “Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” We all agree that they should have known, for here was an innocent Man nailed with spikes to a cross, hanging only by His bleeding wounds. And yet, how could they ever really know that here was the Lord of Glory, loving them to the very last? Then, on through more brief words, to “Father, into Thy hand I command my Spirit,” He murmured, “It is finished.” “What was finished?” - We have been asking for almost two thousand years. It was His “Father’s business.” That was the purpose of His life—to live, to teach, to rise again—all to do His Father’s will. The haunting question asked in an old Negro spiritual that we so love to sing is this: “Were you there when they crucified my Lord...” can be answered in the humble affirmative: “Dear Lord, yes, we wish that we had been there, as were His Mother Mary and a few other faithful ones.” Placing His seal of grateful and loving approval upon the sacrifice of His Son, God the Father raised Him from the dead. This is what makes Easter, Easter. This is what we glory in, “He is risen indeed.” In this coming Easter, let us see in a spiritual sense the empty grave and let us shout together with His Apostles: “Death where is thy sting?” Let us joyfully declare the answer coming from our own hearts: “But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” In the blessed assurance of the resurrection of our Lord, we wish all of you a Blessed Easter. Ott szenved a Megváltó a gyalázat fáján, a kereszten, hogy odaadja magát az Isten gyermekei üdvösségéért. És szenvedése közepette ajkán nem a gyalázat, hanem a magasztalás szava “Atyám” hangzik fel, hisz semmi más nem számított Neki, csupán az Ő Atyjának a közelsége. A másik mondat, ami ajkát elhagyja, ez: “Bocsásd meg nékik, mert nem tudják, mit cselekesznek.” Pedig mi tudjuk, hogy tudnunk kellett volna, hogy egy igaz embert feszítettek a keresztre. És mi ugyancsak kérdezzük: hogyan is tudhatták volna, hogy O volt a dicsőség Ura, a szeretetnek Királya? Majd más szavakban így adja át magát Atyjának: “Atyám! A Te kezedbe helyezem lelkemet!” s “Elvégeztetett!” Mi végeztetett el? Kérdezik a világban sokan szinte kétezer éven át. Az Atyának, az Istennek akarata végeztetett el. Ez volt a Krisztus életének a küldetése, ezért halt meg, ezért támadott föl, hogy betöltse az Ő Atyjának akaratát. Egy régi néger spirituáléban, amit alkalomról alkalomra mi is énekelünk, ez a nagy kérdés: “Ott voltál-e, amikor megfeszítették az Urat?” Amire mi is így kell hogy válaszoljunk: “Bárcsak mi is ott lehettünk volna, amint ott volt az O anyja, Mária Magdaléna és sokan mások! Bárcsak ott lehettünk volna, amikor, mintegy elpecsételte magának Fiát az Atya, amint feltámasztotta Őt a halálból!” Hiszen a Húsvét csak így lesz igazán a Feltámadás ünnepe. Lélekben járjuk végig Jézussal életének ezen szomorú útjait, hogy mi is eljuthassunk oda és megláthassuk a húsvéti üres sírt, és kérdezzük mi is: “Halál! Hol a te fullánkod? Pokol! Hol a te diadalmad?” S jöjjön a mi szívünkből is a boldog válasz: “ De hála az Istennek, aki a diadalmat adja nekünk a mi Urunkban, a Jézus Krisztusban!” A feltámadás drága reménységében teljes, áldott húsvéti ünnepeket kívánunk minden testvérünknek.
