László Lipoczky, one of the board members of the Federation, assisted with the information booth. Federation president George Dózsa and his wife Matilda were among the Federation representatives present at the festival along with Federation director Albert St. Miklosy. The Hungarian Civic Association, which sponsors the festival, is a non-profit coalition of churches and organizations in the New Brunswick Hungarian community. It was organized in 1975 to become involved in the revitalization of New Brunswick on the neighborhood level. The first festival was held in 1976 to celebrate the Bicentennial of our Country. Yolan Varga, Festival Chairperson Maria Poes Fraternal Day Braving an unrelenting heat wave that topped out at 103 degrees, a very loyal gathering of approximately 300 people attended our 7th Annual Maria Poes Fraternal Day on Sunday, August 1, 1999. The tranquil Basilian Fathers Monastery grounds in Matawan, New Jersey, again served as the setting for this year’s event sponsored by the St. George District and combined Branches of New Jersey. The Very Reverend Joseph Erdei, OSBM. is Superior of the Monastery. The Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz, former Bishop of the Calvin Synod, UCC gave the invocation followed by the singing of our National Anthems by Elaine Convery. President George Dózsa extended a welcome on behalf of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. We were honored to have among us Secretary Endre Csornán and his wife Arlene from the Home Office in Washington, D. C. and their family from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Also present was Jay Schenk, Sales Marketing Director of the Catholic Knights of America from St. Louis, Missouri. The traditional Hungarian fare such as pecsenye, langos and bográcsgulyás was offered in addition to hot dogs, hamburgers, com on the cob, watermelon, draft beer and draft birch beer. Hungarian home-made pastries, coffee, tea and our famous cornucopia of Hungarian salami and cheese, tepertő, breads and platters of chilled fresh fruit were served during the afternoon. The instmmental trio “Our Gang” played their usual crowd pleasing Hungarian and American tunes. Under the searing heat in full dress, the ever popular Csurdongolo Dance Group from New Brunswick put on a truly brilliant performance.
