Mother’s Day Celebrated at Benedek’s Farm This year again, Branch 300 in conjunction with the Hungarian Scouts of Washington, D.C., invited its members and friends to celebrate Mother’s Day at its usual outdoor gathering place, the Benedek Farm. The beautiful weather set the tone for this already promisingly successful event. The usual Home Office staff, Martha Major, Teri Pflum and Irene Vallario assumed the positions they held each year, namely Martha and Teri in the kitchen and Irene at the ticket booth. Steve Major and Tibor Pflum were the bartenders again. Newcomer to the Home Office, László Benczo, was the chef who prepared the delicious menu consisting of gyulas and káposztás kolbász. We also had hot dogs for children, and, of course, the wonderful pastries. Needless to say, the kitchen was sold out by the end of the day. Rev. Csaba Krasznai performed the open-air service, and the children presented their delightful Mother’s Day program. It was so interesting to see how many young Hungarian families have recently moved to the Washington, D.C. area not only from Hungary but from different parts of the world to do research work or just to assume a job. This is a welcome sign of Hungary’s new policy of openness and freedom of choice, which, not too long ago seemed but only a dream.
