The joy of music was very much evident when the National Children’s Honor Chorus performed at the Mormon Tabernacle’s Concert Hall in Salt Lake City as part of the program of the Organization of American Kodály Educators National Conference. One hundred eighty six children between the ages of 9 and 13, coming from 40 different states performed selections which included among others: Wir Melodien (J. Brahms), Bolyongás (B. Bartók), Agnus Dei, from Missa in A (M. Kocsar), Wainamoinen Makes Music (Z. Kodály). The performance was superb, as evidenced by the applause, which was thunderous! Dr. Katherine Hickey, my daughter and a member of Branch 259, Los Angeles, was the chairman and coordinator of this National Children's Honor Chorus performing in Salt Lake City at the Organization of American Kodály Educators Conference. monumental project and program. Dr. Hickey brings a broad base of experience as a music educator from early childhood to university levels in general music, Kodály pedagogy and choral music. Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees were completed at California State Universities at Los Angeles and Long Beach, including a year of study at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Director of Musical Arts degree in Music Education from the University of Southern California was completed with honors as Outstanding Music Education Graduate. She is currently Assistant Professor of Music Education at Southern Illinois University School of Music at Carbondale and conductor of the Southern Illinois Children’s Choir, a regional choir of one hundred children. Dr. Hickey’s vast experience as a conductor of children’s choruses include the Pacific Chorale Children’s Intermediate Dr. Katherine M. Hickey Chorus, Angeles Chorale Children’s Chorus, and Southern California Children’s Choruses, Intermediate Chorus. She has developed a musicianship curriculum for children’s choruses and collaborates, reviews, edits and writes for McGraw-Hill projects. Dr. Hickey’s current teaching assignments at SIU include: Fundamentals for Education Majors, Elementary Music Methods, Scientific Evaluation and Research Methods, Philosophy and Psychology of Music Education, Graduate Advisor, Kodály Certification Level 1 solfege and methods. For the first time, the officers and staff members decided to buy food for needy families in the Washington, D.C. area while the Federation would donate the turkey or turkeys. Well, as it turned out, our enthusiasm and joy to give exceeded abundantly beyond all we had anticipated as we had two big baskets filled to the brim with the most delicious foods for young and old. The first people to receive a basket was the Wores Gebretsehima family from Ethiopia who came to the United States three months ago after winning a lottery ticket, which made it possible for them to emigrate to this country.
