Page 10 TESTVÉRISÉG COMMEMORATION Continued IN YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, AND MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA We were invited on March 16, 1997 to celebrate the anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 in Youngstown, Ohio, and McKeesport, Pennsylvania. I had the privilege to represent the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, and it was an honor for me to recite the Hungarian National poem “Talpra magyar” written by Sándor Petőfi. It was heartwarming that after so many years we are still able to get together to celebrate and honor those who died for the Freedom of Hungary. It was touching to see so many young people participate in the celebration, wearing their native costumes and singing traditional songs. A warm “thank you” to Dr. Fabo and Kathy Novak and all those who took efforts to maintain and nurture the Hungarian heritage. I would like to compliment Father Torok for his excellent and heartwarming speech in Hungarian and Congressman Michael Verich for his wonderful presentation of the 1848 Revolution in English. I had the privilege to present them with the 100th Anniversary Album of the Federation and the commemorative plate. We also attended the celebration in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, on March 23, 1997. I would like to compliment the leadership that organized this special event. Those that were involved consisted of the old and young generations. There was singing of Hungarian songs, recitation of poems and an excellent presentation of music by Dorothy & Co. It was moving to see and hear the 1956 Freedom Fighters sing Kossuth songs. For me personally it was an honor to recite the “Talpra magyar,” to represent the HRFA and to present the leadership with the 100th anniversary album and the commemorative plate. Following each of these events were receptions with delicious Hungarian pastries and beverages. They also gave opportunity for fellowship and reacquaintance. I would like to encourage members of the Federation to attend Hungarian events, for you would be surprised to see all the old and new friends you come in contact with. To give you an example, after the events in McKeesport, we met an old friend, Father Kato, whom we had not seen for 36 years. He was the one who married Peggy and me. In Youngstown, Ohio, I met Father Torok whom we had not seen for 30 years. He supported our soccer club from 1957-1960 and would come every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday to watch the games and pick me up in Beaver Falls so that I could play soccer in Youngstown, Ohio. Peggy and I felt so good that we could represent the Federation and relive the memories of the good times we spent with friends. Joe Fabri, Director March 15 celebrated in Youngstown, Ohio.
