Page 14 TESTVÉRISÉG HUNGARIAN FESTIVAL Continued HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HUNGARIAN FESTIVAL IN NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY Teri Pflum from Washington, D.C. were also displayed. The booth was staffed by Anna Lipoczky, Treasurer of Branch 302, and Margaret Pauli, Manager Branches 250 and 501, until 6:00 P.M. when the ever popular “Concert at Twilight” in the Courtyard of the Hungarian Heritage Center began. This year’s “Concert at Twilight” presented Hungarian Music with Carillon Concert by Szilvia Karaszy, internationally acclaimed piano and organ performer. The Szabados-made Carillons are a modern version of the old time Glochenspiel which operate with fine- tuned musical bells rung by tech low voltage electric striking devices. The Szabados Carillon can be played directly from an electronic keyboard. It was a very unique performance indeed. During the day, four Hungarian folk dance ensembles performed in the festival area: the Tisza Ensemble of Washington, D.C.; the Hungarian Folk Dance Ensemble of the New York area; the Hungarian Regös Ensemble of the Scouts of New Brunswick, and the Hungarian Folk Dance Group of the Hungarian American Athletic Club of New Brunswick. Pontozo ’95 presented by the American Hungarian Folklore Centrum and sponsored by the Hungarian American Athletic Club was the culmination of the folk dance performances. Also, the music of Gypsy Joe’s Orchestra reverberated throughout the festival area. The 1995 Festival marked the 20th anniversary of the Hungarian Civic Association which sponsors the Festival. The Association, a coalition of Hungarian churches and organizations, was established in 1975 by the leadership of the Greater New Brunswick Area to become involved in the revitalization of New Brunswick on the neighborhood level. The first Festival, held in 1976, commemorated the U.S. Bicentennial. The Hungarian Reformed Federation participates in the Festival annually and is one of its supporters. Yolan Varga, a member of Branch 302 of the HRFA, has served as coordinator of 15 of the 20 festivals, including the 20th. This year’s Festival turned out to be a very exhilarating event, one which made you feel proud to be a Hungarian. The Federation as well, represented itself with dignity and purpose. Let us look forward to next year, our 100th Anniversary, and plan to make it a very special and memorable year in all aspects of Federation life. Yolan Varga and Michael Pauli, Jr.
