Page 34 TESTVÉRISÉG OBITUARIES Rev. Paul Markovils The Rev. Paul Markovits, bom in Szarvas, Hungary, died at the age of 76 in Clearwater, Florida. Rev. Markovits was the pastor of Jacobs Evangelical Lutheran Church in Masontown and St.Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Carmichaels from 1970 until his retirement in 1982. He remained active in the church after his retirement, serving as a supply pastor on Sundays. Markovits celebrated his 50th anniversary as an ordained Lutheran minister at a special dinner in September of 1990, where he was named pastor emeritus by resolution of the church councils. He left Hungary in 1935 and studied at the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary in Ontario, Canada. In 1946, he became minister at the First Hungarian Lutheran Church in Hazelwood. Markovits was sent to Austria by the Lutheran World Federation in 1957 to work with Hungarian freedom fighters who had fled the failed Hungarian rebellion in 1956. Funeral services were held at Jacobs Evangelical Lutheran Church, Masontown R.D. 1, with the Rev. Martha W. Clementson, assistant bishop of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod, officiating. Interment followed at thechurch cemetery. Ethel Danch Matulis Grillo 1905-1992 Ethel Juliana was born February 13,1905 to Michael Danch and Maria Toth Danch at Cuddy, Penna. Baptized on the 24th of April 1905 at the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Pittsburgh by the Reverend Dr. Alexander Kalassay. Married to Anthony Matulis on the 27th of Jan. 1921. Gave birth to Evelyn Marie on Nov. 27, 1921 and Ethel June on June 23, 1924. Had 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Married John Grillo Jan. 19, 1963. Attended the Gladden United Presbyterian Church most of her life when she was very active in the work of the church. When her mother passed away Nov. 3, 1956, mom took over the insurance and did so unit her death May 8, 1992. Buried at Melrose Cemetery May 12, 1992. Compiled by daughters, Evelyn Kelley & Ethel Dernorsek Charles Kovács 1914-1992 Charles Kovács, 78, former branch manager for the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America in the 50’s and 60’s of Branch 302, died August 14, 1992. He was also a past Secretary of the Magyar Reformed Church and of the Hungarian Democratic Club. During his lifetime he was elected several times as a delegate and alternate director of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. Charles was born July 13, 1914 in Hungary where he was a student of agriculture. He had been employed by the Johnson & Johnson Company. Charles is survived by his wife, Caroline, and his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Leves.
