FRATERNITY Page 17 The Experiences of Hungarian-Americans YOLAN VARGA in collaboration with EMIL VARGA Rev. Emil Varga is shown on the cover of the book as a third grader 1992 marks the 100th Anniversary of the opening of Ellis Island as a port of entry for immigrants to the U.S. To commemorate the celebrations of both the opening of Ellis Island in 1892 and the re-opening of the facility as a Museum in September 1990, Rev. Emil Varga, pastor emeritus of the First Reformed Church in South River, N.J., and his sister Yolan collaborated on the writing of a book entitled CHILDREN OF ELLIS ISLAND. The book records their remembrance as children of tum-of-the-century Hungarian immigrants growing before and during the Great Depression. It is a tribute not only to Hungarians but to all immigrants and their families who were a part of the dual struggle - economic and social and who nevertheless played an important part in our history. The book has been sold exclusively in the Ellis Island Gift Shop and in the Hungarian Heritage Center Gift Shop in New Brunswick. The copies at Ellis Island are sold out, but are still available in the HHC Gift Shop. To order your copy by telephone: (908) 249-4756 or (908) 846-5777. Rev. Emil Varga (Both Reverend Varga and his sister Yolan Varga are members of the HRFA. Yolan is a lifelong member of Branch 302. She is a retired schoolteacher and the author of several publications currently in print.)
