Page 6 TESTVÉRISÉG TRIANON (continued front page 5) Had the American proposals been accepted or plebiscites held, much bitterness, conflict and suffering would have been alleviated and a far more stable East-Central Europe would have emerged. Today, over 3 million Hungarians live outside the present borders of Hungary as national minorities in the states contiguous to Hungary. The majority of them live under dictatorships that deny them their most fundamental human and minority rights and interfere with their attempts to preserve their culture. For instance, the Rumanian government has embarked on an overt and aggressive campaign to denationalize its 2.5 million Hungarians — one of the largest ethnic minorities in Europe. The alleged oppression of national minorities in pre-Trianon Hungary which provided the pretext for the dismemberment of Hungary, pales in comparison to the suffering of the Hungarian minorities today. The denial of the Hungarian minorities' human rights violates the well-established principles and norms of international law acceded to even by the very states whose transgressions are most severe. The intolerance and hatred directed against the Hungarian minorities brutalize its victims, dehumanize its perpetrators, and exacerbate tensions and animosities. The sobering lesson of Trianon is that absent democracy and respect for the right of self-determination, even if only cultural self-determination, tranquility and justice cannot be achieved in this part of Europe. Enlightened and humane policies could serve to heal wounds inflicted over the years and bind a strife-torn region. The poisonous fruits of Trianon must be discarded and replaced with reconciliation, a genuine respect for pluralism and a mutual respect for equal rights, all of which would serve to enrich human experience and fulfill human potential. TRANSYLVANIA FUND The Hungarian Reformed Federation of America pledged its wholehearted support in favor of the Hungarian minority in Transylvania. Although it is our hope that Hungarians in Transylvania do not leave their homeland because of oppression, yet there is a great need to help those that stayed on in their native land and also those refugees that are waiting for resettlement in Hungary and other parts of the world including the United States and Canada. Ezzel a gyülekezeti tervvel volt kapcsolatos az emlékezetes felhívás a Testvériség 1987. évi 3. számában: Eszenyi László: Baraktemplom helyére újat épít egy pesti gyülekezet. Templomépitő Lelkipásztor írja: "Nagytiszteletű Elnök Úr! Egész gyülekezetem nevében hadd köszönjem meg azt a nagyértékű adományt (200 US $), melyet a Reformátusok Lapján keresztül juttatott el épülő templomunk javára. Amerikát járt emberként tudom jól, milyen anyagi gondjai vannak számos ottani gyülekezetnek is. így aztán többszörösen is hálásak és örvendezők vagyunk, hogy meghallgatásra talált kérő szavunk és az Amerikai Magyar Református Egyesület nagylelkűen támogatta Budapest legkisebb gyülekezetének egyáltalán nem kis ügyét. Jelképe annak, hogy imádság és áldozathozatal kíséri munkánkat. Jelképe annak is, hogy a "kinti" és az itthoni magyar reformátusok tudnak közös ügyért együtt— gondolkodni, tenni, áldozatot hozni. S jelképe— számunkra annak, hogy egy elmúlásra ítélt, halódó gyülekezet megújulása nem puszta belügy—hanem több annál: immár maga is jele a magyar református- ság megéledésének.
