COMMONWEALTH OE PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNOR'S OFFICE HARRISBURG PROCLAMATION FRATERNAL WEEK - JUNE 8-14, 1979 The National Fraternal Congress of America is an affiliation of 95 fraternal benefit societies and has more than 10 million members throughout the United States. The fraternal benefit system, through its societies and local units in communities across our nation, performs many religious, charitable, patriotic and benevolent activities. Moreover, the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress, through civic and patriotic projects, renders great service to our citizens here in the Commonwealth. America's fraternal benefit societies have long proclaimed their patriotism by celebrating Fraternal Week through special observances of Flag Day, June 14th. Additionally, the fraternal benefit societies are a part of the National Fraternal Flag Day Foundation, an organization devoted to keeping alive the memory of Dr. Bernard J. Cigrand, the "father" of Flag Day, through the maintenance of the schoolhouse in Fredonia, Wisconsin, where in 1885, the first known Flag Day ceremony was held. Therefore, I, Dick Thornburgh, Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, do hereby proclaim JUNE 8-14, 1979, as FRATERNAL WEEK in recognition of the efforts of Pennsylvania's fraternal benefit societies in promoting patriotism among our citizens. GIVEN under my hand and the Seal of the Governor, at the City of Harrisburg, this eighteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and seventy-nine, and of the Commonwealth, the two hundred and third/ / /1
