BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

The Board of Directors regular Annual Spring Meeting will he held on April 2, 1979, Monday morning at 9:30 o’clock. The plenary sessions will be held in the large meeting room of the Chevy Chase Holiday Inn. The committee meetings will he held in the departments of the National Officers in the Home Office.

IRAN

On March 5th it was first page news that the Voyager Spacecraft revealed that the four large moons of Jupiter possess the patched color surfaces of red, orange, yellow, blue and white. To the world scientists and the planetary geologists this was a historic discovery. However, for the fourth month Iran was still the real first page news with important editorial comments. After 69 days on March 5th Iran resumed pumping oil to the world. A Japanese tanker was loaded with 230,000 tons of oil and ready to sail to Japan witli the precious cargo.

After a year of sporadic anti-government demonstrations on September 7th, 1978 Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi’s autocratic government declared martial law in the major cities of Iran. On the following day the army killed 58 Iranian demonstrators in Tehran alone. This was the beginning of the transformation of the Middle East political terrain. Iran with an army of 285,000 ground forces, 100,000 air force and 22,000 navy was trained and equipped by the U. S. The Israeli security forces trained the hated Iranian secret police, Savak. After the revolution the dreaded secret police was abolished and the mighty- powerful-prestigious army totally disintegrated.

The Shah’s father was forced to abdicate in 1941. He went to South Africa into exile. Died in 1950. The Shah himself avoided arrest by Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh after ruling more than a decade by flying from his Caspian sea retreat to Baghdad, Iraq. In 1953 the CIA engineered a coup against Mossadegh and thus the U.S. was instrumental in putting the Shah back on the throne. He was called His Imperial Majesty, King of Kings and the Light of the Aryans. After 37 years of rule on January 16th the Shah left Iran for a “vacation”. He visited Egypt where he received a royal reception by President Anwar Sadat and now is staying in Morocco. Before his departure in November he appointed a military government. However, because of job slowdowns, strikes and violent demonstrations the Shah was forced to appoint a civilian government headed by Shahpour Bakhtiar and a regency council to represent the crown during his absence. 63 princes and princesses of the royal family left Iran. The 18 year old Crown Prince Reza is taking a college course and receives flight instructions in the U.S. An Iranian economist estimates their foreign assets to be $20 billion. All the property of the royal family held in Iran had been confiscated by the new Islam government.
