From the OFFICE of the SECRETARY On June 3rd I represented the National Fraternal Congress of America at the Virginia State Fraternal Congress in Staunton, Virginia. As a member of the Family Life Committee of the NFC A, I was the banquet speaker and spoke on the theme “Fraternalism is a Family Affair.” The Congress was well attended. It continues to show the outside world that Fraternal Life Insurance plays an ever important part in the American way of life through the many charitable and benevolent projects sponsored by the Fraternal societies. This is why we constantly stress the importance of enrolling new members into our Federation. This is your organization and being a member gives you the privilege of offering our life insurance plans to your relatives or friends. Urge them to become a member also and help us to continue our efforts to help our brethren in time of need. Let our local representatives know of anyone they should contact and they will provide them with all of the information. With your help we can make it happen. Our Chicago district meeting was held in Whiting, Indiana on June 24th. Again the emphasis was placed on the writing of new business and being of service to our membership. The Bethlen Home residents will have a booth at the Ligonier bazaar on Saturday, August 26th at the Ligonier Heritage Methodist Church. Many of our ladies are baking and donating handmade items. Please try to attend this affair if possible and help support this worthwhile project. On September 2nd our Field Force will meet in Ligonier. The other important meeting dates are printed in this publication. IMPORTANT NOTICE Our residents in the Bethlen Home are making crafts and projects and are in need of additional sewing machines. If vou have a sewing machine or know of someone that would like to donate to a worthwhile cause, we would like to hear from you. Please contact Rev. Paul Kovács, administrator or Mr. Elmer E. Vargo, Secretary to make arrangements for pick up. PLEASE HELP US. August H. Daviet, the Headmaster of the Rutgers Preparatory School in Franklin Township announced that the scholarship committee selected Ms. Suzanne Eger, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex B. Eger Jr., of Perth Amboy, N.J., the winner of the 7th grade scholarship. Mr. Alex B. Eger, Jr., our Legal Counsellor and Suzanne are both members of our Perth Amboy branch No. 80. Mr. Daviet stressed that intellectual ability, leadership potential, community involvement and a well-developed sense of personal values were among the qualities the scholarship committee selected the winner. The award carries a $2,000 annual tuition grant for each of the next six years. Ms. Eger entered Rutgers Prep in 1974 in the third grade and has been an editor of the Lower School magazine and the yearbook. She participated in gymnastics, soft- hall and tennis and received the RPS award for outstanding service to the school for the last three consecutive years. Outside the school she has followed her interest as a member of a community swimming and diving team, as a Girl Scout, and as an accomplished pianist and entertainer. Suzanne was one of the three winners among 204 candidates seeking the three scholarships. The Scholarship Committee used a competitive examination to choose semi-finalists. After careful reading of applications and credentials, four to six finalists were then selected for each grade level. The committee selected the winners after personal interviews with each of the finalists. It is a great pleasure to congratulate Suzanne, at age 12, as the youngest award winner. She was honored with an annual tuition grant for the next six years. Keep up the good work.
