1 of view we should take the average of the 1972 and 1973 branch productions as basic figures. 5. In 1973 we studied the age groups requesting cash- surrenders and we made an effort to try to save them. Much time was spent on the project by our Field Force members and Branch Managers. I received many reports. The summarization of the responses I received may be stated in the following three sentences: we receive cash surrenders from all age groups; only a few cash surrenders requests were saved; in a few cases new insurance was sold and a few persons promised to take out new insurance later. I estimate that approximately 1-2% of the cash surrenders may be saved by personal contact; 5-10% may purchase new insurance. The Branch Managers should visit from time to time the cash surrender persons with their Section Managers. A 5 to 10% chance to sell new insurance is a worthwhile effort. Our 1973 cash surrenders were again too high and way out of proportion when we compare it according to percentage with the commercials. The endowment certificates are cashed when they mature, or are cashed before their maturity because the temptation of cashing a certificate which has a large amount of cash surrender value. This is the temptation to which many of our members fall as victims and the Federation suffers in loss of membership, number of certificates, insurance in force and annual premium income. The member who cashed his certificate will never he able to get insurance coverage for the low amount of premium he had. He suffers irreplaceable financial loss. We must train our Field Force members to change their pattern of salesmanship and to realign it to the demands of our uncontrolled inflationary time. This I hope that we will be able to do with the variety of our new plans. Fraternally yours, Arpad George, Secretary FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY CARDINAL MINDSZENTY. Cardinal József Mindszenty spent two days in Washington. At his arrival President Zoltán Beky and the Secretary represented the Federation as the invited guests of the Reception Committee. All the National Officers were present at the “prayer-breakfast” held at the Statler Hilton Hotel. President Beky introduced the Cardinal to the 600 persons who assembled in the early morning hours to demonstrate their respect and honor toward the Prince of the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Mindszenty also visited our Home Office. President Beky extended a warm welcome in the presence of the National Officers, the Home Office employees and in behalf of the large fraternal family of the Federation which has many members belonging to the Roman Catholic faith. Cardinal Mindszenty responded to the greetings of President Beky by stating that he came to the United States to express his personal gratitude for all the help and support he and Hungary received from America. DISTRICT MEETINGS. Our first district meeting was held on May 18th in the Hungarian Reformed Church in Indiana Harbor. The meeting was attended by the National Officers, Mr. Charles Mo- dorv. Board of Director, Rev. Dr. Arthur A. Ludwig, Section Manager, and by many branch managers from the Midwest area. After the reports of the President and the Treasurer, the Secretary and the Controller conducted their respective departmental instructions. During the question and answer period many questions were asked about the new insurance plans and applications as well as the computerization study made by Mr. Eszenyi. The Ladies Society prepared a fine lunch and supper. The Rt. Rev. Bishop Arpad Beretz said grace at the dinner. W e enjoyed the fellowship during the meals. On May 19th our Gary, Indiana Harbor and East Chicago branches sponsored a Cultural Program in the fellowship Hall of St. Mark’s Church in Gary, Indiana. S122.50 was given to the Chicago Tulipános Láda Association which provided the major part of the program. $122.50 was sent to the Bethlen Home as a gift of the three sponsoring branches. Recognition and thanks are extended for the successful cultural program to Dr. Ludwig and Mr. Julius Simon, branch manager. The Schedule of our future district meetings: June 8—Western Pennsylvania in McKeesport June 15—Eastern Area in New Brunswick June 22—Ohio Area in Cleveland. INFLATION. Unless inflation will he brought under control, the insurance marketing will be forced to make proper adjustments in the present insurance plans and premiums. The government seems to control inflation with one hand while feeding its flames with the other. Economists and politicos continue their academic dialogue about the need of controls and the advantage of free market. At the same time, the oil monopoly and the pressure groups succeed to get more for their products and services. Since 1973 term insurance is on the increase. The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Companv is offering special term insurance to its members. The Kemper Life Insurance Company is introducing four new term insurance plans this year. Our Field Force members should likewise follow this trend in salesmanship. In our new plans the Federation has also introduced new term life insurance coverage. 16
