Gracza, Michael, Br. 225, Buffalo, N. Y. IT’S REALLY AN INSURANCE AGENCY by Robin Perlstein On New Mexico Avenue near AU stands a staid, brick building surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. A sign over the door says “Kossuth House.” A visit to this den of mystery sheds light on its true identity. It is the headquarters of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. It is neither a religious organization nor an ethnic social club, but an insurance agency. Officially, it is referred to as a legal reserve fraternal benefit society. Translated, this means the profits go to charitable causes. Upon entering, one is welcomed by a red carpet in the front hall. On the walls are pictures of Louis Kossuth, a prominant Hungarian, and Theodore Roosevelt. The Federation maintains close ties with the church. Bishop Zoltán Beky is the president. Nineteen persons work in the Kossuth House and all are bilingual. The organization the Federation supports is The Bethlen Home, a charitable institution for dependent children and old people situated in Ligonier, Pa. “On the average, the Home feeds around a hundred persons who are lonely and tired, nearing the end of life’s journey,” says Fraternity, the Federation’s newspaper. The Board of Trustees meets annually in a red- carpeted room with a long table with green felt covering. The walls are panelled with dark wood. On one wall is hung a tapestry bought from the University of Pittsburgh. On the other walls are pictures of assorted Hungarians and one American, George Washington. The Federation was chartered by Congress in 1907. The membership totals 35,000 and assets amount to more than seven million dollars.
