We did not want to keep the silence of the grave nor do bidding of robbers in that land of ours. .... We did not want penance for fabricated sins, nor look at anyone’s cruelly branded front. We did not want to speak in whispers any more, nor fear at every knock on our own front door. .... We did not ivant to yield our treasures to strangers any more and get the bloody dirt along the Party line. We did not want to utter mendacious verbiage or fall to torture-cellars and perhaps to death. Because we did not want, because we do not want to be the trembling, bitter and abused beggars of a fettered land, who degenerate, with broken wings, with broken wills .... who stroll aimlessly and just gather food, to exist merely....
