Chicago Institute of Psychoanalysis, was a well-known psychiatrist and psychologist along with Egon Brunswik from Budapest who did early work on probability learning and concept formation with probabilistic cues. In the industrial development of America a famous “first” was the work of a Hungarian American Tivadar Puskas who was pioneer of wire-transmitted entertainment, the ancestor of the radio. He became an original collaborator of Edison and eventually became director of the Edison World Exhibition and general manager of Edison’s business interests abroad. A well-known Hungarian manufacturer is Charles Louis Fleischmann, best known for his manufacture of yeast. Bela Alexay is chief engineer of General Electric Company and József Galamb helped perfect the original model T Ford. In the development of science, Hungarian physicists and mathematicians have contributed greatly. In our age today, science has become a most important part of America’s cultural development. Refuge physicists from Hungary were able to move freely in their new environment adding their knowledge and individual research style to work which was already under way at American institutions or in seeking out new fields for exploration. American scholarship was enriched by these new arrivals. Among the gifted scientists was Theodor von Karman, a gifted industrial scientist, who developed the Karman Theory of Turbulence known all over the world and wrote books on general aerodynamic theory. A famous mathematician was John von Newmann, a professor at Princeton University, who specialized in the theory of sets, mathematical logics, quantum mechanics, the theory of Hilbert space, groups and measures, and fluid mechanics. He made an important contribution in the field of atomic energy. His work was a contribution to the ideal of the universality and organic unity of mathematics. A Hungarian, Leo Szilard, laid indispensible footwork for Watson and Crick’s discovery of DNA. He was a physicist and quantum mechanics man who was first to think of the application of the atom to bombs. He was a member of the team which built the first atomic pile, applying atomic energy to explosives. Edward Teller, father of the H bomb was a well-known Hungarian Thus the Hungarians who sought to make America their home have made many generous contributions to the historical and cultural development of this great nation. By keeping their traditions, they have enriched the American way of life. They have helped to teach appreciation and understanding of other cultures. They gave of themselves to make this country strong and greatly blessed.
