BATTA, Stephen, Br. 330, Paterson, N. J., on the 22nd of July, 1970, at the age of 89. Divide and rule. This political maxim cited by that master of strategy, Machiavelli, is true, yet ugly and dangerous by implication. Set black against white; Catholic or Protestant against Jew; management against labor; blue eyes against brown eyes. Any group against another—no matter what each represents—creates hatred, fear. And the result is division; the result is a weakening of the people. Who benefits when people band together to clash with their opponents? Certainly the citizens of America do not benefit. Only the enemies of America find comfort and joy in the divisive results of group hatred and fear of opposition forces. Only by dividing the people of America can an enemy rule this land. So long as individual freedom is at stake, that long must Americans beware of group against group. For America must be united to be strong. And strong, together, no enemy can rule this land of the free. The Summer School children with their parents, teachers and guests at the Bethlen Home. 22
