VIOLENCE Violence lias become so much a part of American living that it can truly he described as a fad. Little children prefer toy guns to chemistry sets or trains, guns are used in place of reason, and people seem to enjoy movies and headlines relating to heating and killings. The reason for all this seems to lie in our heritage. We are taught at an early stage in our life of the magnificent accomplishments made by the early settlers in civilizing our land. How they endured long winters and fought the savage Indians to build up our great nation. We tend to identify with these men and as there are no longer any Indians to fight our energies are turned to different fields. When strikers and workers, who have stayed on the job meet, they immediately start to throw punches and bottles instead of reasoning out their differences. Oswalds, Sirhans, and Rays use a gun instead of a vote to silence the leaders who advocate a belief contrary to their own. Movie producers know that people will not enjoy their film unless someone is mangled, mauled, strangled or kicked. In fact they have learned that the more violence it contains the bigger the hit, which may explain the rise in violence in cinema. Today’s idols are rough, unfeeling individuals who will do anything to achieve their goal regardless of who is hurt. Love, compassion and humanity are obsolete words in our society for they represent something that isn't ‘'hip.” Hate groups offer more proof to the ready acceptance of violence in America. Groups who hate “Reds”, hate race, and hate religion find their ranks swelling with people, and often very important people. To carry a gun or a blade is to be cool. It is the supreme symbol of masculine potency. Where are we beaded? I’m sure few people know anti even fewer people care enough to take the time out from reading their latest copy of “True Detective” to give it serious thought. Violence has the most important trait of a fad. It is the general acceptance and blind following of millions of people. James Kovács Member of Branch 15 the CONSTITUTIO^ * IS TO THE ™ Nation INSURE YOUR MORTGAGE AND YOUR LIFE WITH OUR LOW COST REDUCING TERM INSURANCE PLAN FROM 16 - 50 This low cost but highly recommended insurance plan is attached to our regular plans as a rider and is especially appropriate when the member (1) wishes to insure that the balance of a mortgage can be paid off upon his death or (2) wishes to obtain a largest possible face amount of immediate insurance for the amount of premium he can afford to pay. A member with a $10,000 20 year mortgage, for example, could cover it (with a little left over — the excess depending on when the member should die) by purchasing only $2,000 basic life insurance (Whole life, 20 Payment Life, etc.) and a $10,000 reducing term rider. At issue age 35 on the Whole Life plan, would cost only $8.99 a month decreasing to $4.29 after 17 years where $10,000 Whole Life costs $19.73. The total benefit would be $12,000 in the 1st year, $11,500 in the 2nd, $11,000 in the 3rd, etc., reducing by $500 a year to $2,000 at the end of 20 years, then remaining level for life. Th is rider would be issued for any of 5 terms: 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years. The amount of insurance on the rider would reduce by the same amount each year until it reached zero at the end of the term leaving onlv the basic life insurance in force. Premiums would lie payable for all but the last few years of the term. The following table illustrates the premium period and the amount of annual decrease in the amount of insurance per $1,000 initial amount for each term period as well as the ages at which the rider would be issued. Term Issue Premium Annual Decrease per $1,000 (benefit period) Ages Period Initial Amount 10 years 16-60 8 years $100 15 years 16-55 13 years 67 20 years 16-50 17 years 50 25 years 16-45 21 years 40 30 years 16-40 26 years 33 CONVERSION At any time during the premium period up to age 65 the Reducing Term insurance could he converted without evidence of insurability to permanent insurance. The maximum amount of permanent insurance would be 80% of the current reduced amount of term insurance. The premium rate would be the rate illustrated by the Federation for new issues at the date of conversion.
