What records can be used to prove my age for social security purposes? A. Many people find their birth is not on record. Other records such as the Federal Census records, early school records, or early voter records can be used to help establish the date of birth for social security purposes. * * * Q. I am enrolled in both parts of Medicare. My doctor gives me a shot every two weeks and prescribes medicine I take at home for high blood pressure. Will Medicare pay for these medicines? A. Medicare will pay most of the cost of the shots given by your doctor or any other medication he administers. However, the prescription medicine you take at home is not covered under Medicare. * * * Q. I am a widow age 59.1 am unable to find work as I have no experience. Am I eligible for social security benefits? A. You will be eligible for reduced widow’s benefits the month you become 60 years old. You should take your marriage certificate, and an old record of your age to the social security office three months before your 60th birthday. * * * Q. I will be 18 in December. I have been accepted to go to college beginning January 23. Will my social security checks stop when I become age 18? A. You will be eligible to receive your checks every month as long as you are a full-time student. However, no checks are paid after age 22. You would not be required to attend school during regular vacation periods to receive payment. * * * Q. My husband is past retirement age and gets a monthly social security check. We have one child now age ny2 and I along with the child get a monthly social security check. When my child reaches age 18, she plans to go on to school. Will both my daughter and I receive our social security checks as long as she is in school? A. No. Your daughter can continue to receive her social security check after age 18 and up to age 22 so long as she is unmarried, a full-time student, and not earning over $1500 per year; however. YOUR social security check will terminate when your child reaches 18 unless you are then age 62 or older. Three months before you are age 62 you should get in touch with your social security office. They will assist you in applying for benefits. IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Question: I am in the United States on a visitor’s visa to visit my sister who is an American citizen. I came from an Iron Curtain country and cannot face returning to it. I would like to ask for asylum in the United States. How do I go about it? Answer: The asylum provisions of the U. S. immigration law are very limited and do not entitle refugees to permanent residence except where such persons have resided in the United States for two years, which you apparently have not done. On the other hand, since your sister is an American citizen, she can petition for you and you are eligible for a fifth preference immigrant visa. I believe that would be a tetter solution in your case and suggest that you consult a social service agency or attorney specializing in the immigration field before you take any further steps. 14
