FRATERNITY 5 Benefits under the supplementary plan will be subject to an annual deductible of $50 and a co-insurance factor of 20%. Payment of the $20 deductible toward the cost of out-patient diagnostic services (under the basic plan) can be used to help offset this $50 deductible. The supplementary plan covers: (1) Physicians' services, including surgery whether performed in a hospital, clinic, office or home. (2) Up to 100 home nursing visits each year, in addition to those allowed under the basic plan and without any requirement for prior hospitalization. (3) Various services and supplies, whether provided in or out of a medical institution, such as X-ray and other diagnostic tests, radiological treatments, surgical dressings, splints, casts, iron lungs, specified prosthetic devices, artificial arms and legs, artificial eyes, and ambulance service. Many elderly people are thinking about dropping — or already have dropped — their private health insurance policies, because they believe that the Medicare benefits are now available to them. This is not true. The hospital benefits, out-patient diagnostic service benefits and home nursing care under the government program will not go into effect until July 1, 1966, and nursing home benefits will not be available until January 1, 1967. Urge old people to keep their private health insurance coverage in force — at least until the new health care benefits become available under Social Security. It may be, too, that some people age 65 or older will want to keep their private insurance in force for such purposes as: (1) paying the difference in costs between a private room and the amount Medicare allows for hospitalization; (2) providing benefits which are not a part of the Medicare program; and (3) providing additional benefits which will be extremely welcome in case of need. Caution elderly people not to drop their private health insurance coverage until they have discussed the matter thoroughly with you or with a representative of the company with whom they are insured.
