However — the tradition has not always been strong in all households. Consider these three true case histories. Father No. 1 contributed a flat $25 a month to his son’s education. This father did not understand about such things as tuition, room and board, textbooks, spending money, clothing allowance, etc. He thought that anybody ought to be able to get along in college on $25 a month. Father No. 2 said: “So you want to go to college? That’s fine with me. Go right ahead. I have no objections.” The son in this case was fortunate. He postponed his college education until after the Second World War, then attended school on the G. I. Bill. Father No. 3 said: “So long as you continue sending mother and me $50 a month, you have my permission to go to college.” The other children were contributing to the family income, and this father saw no reason why a boy should evade his responsibility by hiking off to college. We still encounter such fathers occasionally and, when we do, we can forget about them as prospects for educational plans. But, fortunately, most people want to provide as much financial assistance as possible when their children go to college. But, unfortunately, most of them wait too long to begin a program of systematic savings to realize their dreams.
