FRATERNITY 11 STUDENT TALENTS STIR AUDIENCE OVATIONS Enthusiasm was in the air from the first moment to the last as four student artists performed for graduation and other honors at the fifth of the season’s concerto concerts in Kilbourn Hall, Rocesters, N. Y., on March 3, 1966. There was good reason — all in all — for the audience’s warmth, for all four showed the poise and polish that indicate professional competence. THE APPLAUSE REACHED ITS CRESCENDO FOR THE PERFORMANCE BY STEPHEN KECSKEMETHY, violin student of Millard Taylor, who played two movements of the exhaustingly difficult Concerto No. 1 of Béla Bartók as though it were just an evening’s diversion. The audience responded with a standing ovation that must rate with the heartiest demonstrations in the long history of these events. Perhaps the best test of the performance was that it made the abstruse and jagged pattern of Bartok’s music not only accessible to the ear but stimulating in its unusual use of harmonic devices and its spacious orchestral association with the solo instrument. The soloist, playing it from memory, revealed the technical security and the grace and finesse that Bartók demands. As an eyewitness to this memorable event and as a friend of the Kecskemethy family, I was more than happy to join the large audience in standing ovation to honor the amazingly fine young artist — István Zoltán. And as I pay tribute to him and to his justly proud parents by sharing this newspaper report with our readers, I wish him well and pray for his continued success. „ , P.
