FRATERNITY 11 THE SONS OF LIBERTY On October 31, 1765 — 200 years ago — the Sons of Liberty, an organization comprising numerous secret patriotic societies in the American colonies, was organized. These societies consisted largely of Committees of Correspondence, groups of citizens who through correspondence carried on resistance against oppressive British economic and political actions. The name of the society was taken from a speech made in the English Parliament by Isaac Barré, in which he referred to American patriots as “Sons of Liberty”. Among the leaders of the Sons of Liberty were Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. The organization opposed the Stamp Act of 1765, and helped enforce the policy of non-importation, whereby American merchants refused to import goods carried in British ships. In 1774 the “Sons of Liberty” took part in convoking the Continental Congress. After the American Revolutionary War, the organization disbanded. — (A. C. N. S.)
