Membership in this organization is restricted to women who are direct descendants of fighters for American independence. Delegates from its chapters meet annually in Washington in April. The Society has collected many historic relics which, with its fine genealogical library of some 32,000 volumes and thousands of pamphlets and manuscripts, is located in the DAR headquarters in Washington. The Society has done much for the preservation and marking of historic places, but has frequently taken what many feel is a reactionary stand on immigration and interracial issues. — (A. C. N.
