8 FRATER NI TY LEI’S SMILE Overheard at the water cooler: “She’s got one of those upswept hairdos — you know — the kind that looks like it was swept up off the floor.” ★ ★ ★ ing The nice thing about old age is that you can whistle while brush- your teeth. ★ ★ ★ “Mrs. Jones, may I go in your back yard and get my arrow?” “Certainly, Johnnie; where is it?” “I think it’s stuck in your cat.” ★ ★ ★ REMARKS ON THE NEW CAR Father — “How many miles to a gallon?” Mother — “What color is it?” Daughter — “How many will it set comfortably?” Son — “How fast will she go?” Neighbors — “How can they afford it?” ★ ★ ★ A noted Canadian entomologist was delivering a lecture on the danger of rat infestation. The sixth grade class listened with apparent attention, and after the lecture one of the students wrote the lecturer a note of thanks. It concluded: “We didn’t even know what a rat looked like until you came.” ★ ★ ★ An item in the church publication announced: “Woodrow S. Paine has donated a loud-speaker to the church in memory of his wife.” ★ ★ ★ During a medical examination a man was asked to stretch out his arms in front of him. The hands trembled. “Good heavens, how much do you drink?” asked the doctor. “Scarcely anything at all”, said the man. “I spill most of it.” ★ ★ ★ Lady at the Missing Persons Bureau: “He’s tall, good-looking, has black wavy hair, dreamy eyes and wears clothes well. Anyone coming close to that description will do.” ★ ★ ★ Discussing Puritan folk ways, the American history teacher asked: “Does anyone know what kind of people were punished in the stocks?” A small voice piped up: “Small investors.” ★ ★ ★ A group of plumbers were discussing their respective jobs. One young plumber in the group complained loudly about how hard he had to work that morning — but he was soon silenced. “You think you got it tough?” said an old-timer. “Listen. When I first started in this business, they let us lay two lengths of pipe and then turned on the water — and we had to keep ahead of it!”
