6 FRATERNITY PROBLEMS ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY Question: I am a widow of four years and will be 62 years old in 1965. I have never worked under social security; however, my husband has always worked under social security. Can you tell me how much I will receive? Answer: You will receive 82Vi% of your husband’s benefit. Please check with your local Social Security office in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, for the exact amount of your benefit. Question: A friend of mine has 17 quarters of coverage and had to stop working due to a permanent disability. Is she eligible for disability pension under social security? Answer: No. She must have 20 quarters during the 10-year period preceding her disability to be eligible. Question: My husband is 69 years of age and is receiving $118.00 a month from social security. If he should pass away, would I receive any benefits and how much? I am now 54 years of age. Answer: You would receive a lump sum of $255.00 for burial expenses upon filing a claim; then, at age 62, you would receive $97.40 a month. Question: I am 47 and worked from 1940 to 1949 when I stopped working to raise a family. Also, I am older than my husband. Do I have to wait until my husband is of age to receive social security? Answer: No. Based on your age you need 27 quarters to be insured. You already have sufficient quarters and you may start receiving benefits at age 62. You do not have to wait until your husband retires to receive social security benefits on your own record. Question: When I am 65 my wife will be 62. What percentage will my wife receive at age 62; and at age 64? Answer: At 62 your wife's benefits will be reduced 25%; at 63, 16-2/3%; at age 64, 8-1/3%. Question: My wife is now 49 years of age and has worked under social security from 1937 through 1942. Will she be entitled at age 62? Answer: Your wife needs 25 quarters. If she worked full years from 1937 through 1942, she has only 24 quarters of coverage. She needs one more quarter to be insured. Question: Can you tell me the minimum benefits due a widow with two children under 18 years of age? When would the benefits stop? Answer: The minimum rate is $60.00 and the maximum rate is $254.00. The benefits stop when the youngest child becomes age 18, providing you are under age 62. If you are age 62 when the youngest child becomes 18, your benefits as a widow would continue as long as you are the unremarried widow of the wage earner.
