2 FRATERNITY United States, preceding, during and just following World War II. These add to and enrich our heritage. “There Are Secrets” is a kaleidoscopic presentation of a young man’s search and experiences to find identity and fulfillment in his life in these years when gigantic forces clashed in awesome proportion — when the present cold war commenced. In this titanic struggle he meets outstanding personalities, such as the Immortal Four Chaplains: George L. Fox, Clark Polling, John P. Washington and Goode S. Alexander, who willingly gave their lives to save others; also General George S. Patton, Jr., the gallant and foresighted leader of the legendary Third Army, and others, who do not fail humanity and spur our courage and fortify our stamina to face our future with sobering facts and calm common-sense. In the course of development, many avenues are explored . . . from the near presence of God to the tyrannical essence of commnuism; from blind good intentions to heroic accomplishments. These are the frame and background of a beautiful romance: the well of sighs, tears and happiness. “It is an exciting novel, rich in humor and understanding wisdom, a novel that illuminates the perplexing problems and dilemma of our time and shows us humanity’s triumphant answer to them.” “It is not only a delightfully entertaining book, but it will also inspire the reader to appreciate and pursue our American Way of Life.” These are quotes from some reviewers. To fight a war we need warriors, individuals, who follow us leaders. Many men and women of the present generation were raised in a nohome, no-country, world-citizenry atmosphere, where often “the punks are glorified” and “unadultered evil” is given as an example to our youth. There is a responsibility on each of us in this respect. Since the thirties the fiscal irresponsibility prevails, a deceitful presentation to the Congress and to the public. (“Backdoor Spending” in READER’S DIGEST, May 1963, p. 49-ff.) Forces are deliberately undermining the ethical and moral standards on which our nation was founded. The courts are overloaded to interpret moral codes and ethical rights. As Mr. Harvey aptly said: “Our clergy is not being persecuted; it’s being ignored.” Who created this milieu? Let us humble ourselves and let us acknowledge that many of our communication facilities contribute countless hours to undo what some of us may learn in religious circles. In our welfare society, where responsibilities from the individual are passed to the state and nearly everything is subsidized, the rank and file follow the leaders, often blindly. We are in the midst of a struggle that most of us dare not question. Few want to know how we got here and why? The pipers pipe a well directed melody; conformity is the password, and those who hear it are expected to behave like the poor pariah, Winston Smith, in “1984”. There are few individuals who use the God-given common-sense. Jefferson aptly said: “It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand alone.” Let’s begin here and let’s restore individual dignity, responsibility and integrity which all of us can have by adhering to our fundamental instincts embodied in the Golden Rule: “Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.”
