FRATERNITY 3 K. C.: “SOMEWHERE THERE’S MUSIC” “What you are about to see”, said the host, “is a happy solution to an old family problem.” He led his guests into the den. “I wanted a place for the hi-fi”, he continued. “But my wife put her foot down. She said she wanted a den, not a workshop. Fortunately, we had one thing in common ... we both love music!” He pointed to the wall across the room. In the center was a handsome baby grand piano. Stacks of sheet music piled on it showed it was seldom idle. On either side of the piano were twin stereo speakers. There were murmurs of admiration. “Nice looking speakers”, remarked one of the guests. “Your idea?” “No”, he replied, “my wife’s. In fact, this whole thing is her project.” “What whole thing?” “Why, the focal point of the house . . . our ‘music center’.” He proceeded to demonstrate. Opening a stained mahogany cabinet on the wall above the piano, he displayed an FM tuner, turntable and amplifier. Next to it was a tape recorder . . . built right into the cabinet. Off to one side, the wall was lined with shelves. A sliding door rolled back to reveal rows of long playing records and recording tapes. Above the shelves, hung from the wall, was a guitar. Meanwhile, the guests had seated themselves in several comfortable chairs and a couch, subtly arranged to face the piano and the speakers. “We used to call this the den”, the host explained. “Now, it’s the music room.” ★ ★ ★ Like the gentleman in the story, thousands of Americans are finding ways to make music the most attractive part of their homes. What makes a home “music center”? Simply an area of your home — it can be a den, rumpus room or simply a corner of the living room — devoted to the enjoyment of music. And if you fancy yourself a music lover . . . with an eye for beauty . . . you might consider the idea. If you already own a piano — or even an organ — you’re on your way. Start with that and build around it. As every home decorator knows, the piano is more than an instrument — it’s an article of furniture — and a very important part of your home furnishings. The important thing here is harmony — just as in music. A grand piano blends well with traditional decor . . . but a fairly new spinet demands more modern surroundings.
