FRATERNITY 5 I SHOOK THE HAND OF LT. COLONEL GLENN Because I am an Ohioan and a member of the Ohio Girls’ Club, I was invited to attend a reception held on the evening of February 28 at the State Department for Lt. Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr., the first American Astronaut to circle the earth three times. It was a great thrill to shake the hand of Col. Glenn and the hand of his fellow astronauts, Commander Alan B. Shepard and Captain Virgil I. Grissom. Three thousand people showed up, instead of the 600 who received formal invitations, but at a time like this who can curb the enthusiasm of other hundreds of well-wishers! Others in the receiving line were the wives of the “spacemen”, Col. and Mrs. Glenn’s parents and their children. Col. Glenn was gracious and had a beaming smile for all of us. Then I spied Mrs. Glenn’s now famous lapel pin and asked her whether that was the pin which had traveled around the world with Gol. Glenn, and she said, “Yes, and I’m so proud of it!” Her radiant smile showed it too! That this was an Ohio party was evidenced by the red carnations everywhere. The Marine Band supplied the music. After the guests were received, Representative Moorhead presented Col. Glenn with the flag of Ohio and Congressman Moeller greeted the Colonel in the name of all Ohioans and read a proclamation on behalf of Governor Michael V. DiSalle, declaring February 20 as “John H. Glenn, Jr., Day” in Ohio. To the delight of all of us, Col. Glenn addressed us as “Fellow Buckeyes”, and his short talk was warm, friendly and unassuming. His calm poise, his ability to be the master of every situation and to say the right thing at the right time was most impressive. I wondered if he had found something in outer space? Truly, it is a delight to recall that ... I shook the hand of Col. Glenn! Elizabeth Balazs THANKS ! Rt. Rev. George E. K. Borshy, President The Hungarian Reformed Federation of America Washington, D. C. Dear Sir: On behalf of my mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Nagy, and myself, I wish to thank you for your expression of sympathy. Furthermore, I thank you for the prompt and courteous attention shown us during our recent loss and bereavement. With kindest personal regards, I am Ebensburg, Penna. Fraternally yours, Dr. Joseph Nagy
