THE NEW COMMUNIST PARTY The UN Special Committee’s report discussing the anatomy of the Hungarian revolt points out that the breakdown of the Communist structure became complete seven days after the student demonstration, which sparked the uprising. The UN report established the fact that on October 30 János Kádár, speaking on the Budapest radio, announced that all members of the Presidium of the Hungarian Workers’ Party (Communist Party) were in agreement with the Government’s decision to abolish the one-party system. He said that he whole-heartedly supported this decision. Addressing himself to honest and well-meaning Communists, Kádár added to this announcement that the Communist Party might have to start afresh, but having freed itself of the burden of the crimes of its past leaders, it would now be in a more favorable situation for the tasks ahead.
