FRATERNITY 5 FROM “A LITANY FOR MODERN MAN” Human unity is the fulfillment of diversity. It is a many-stranded texture, with color and depth. The sense of human unity makes possible a reverence for life. When I enter my house, I enter with the awareness that my roof can only be half-built and my table only half-set; For half the men on this earth know the emptiness of want. When I walk through the streets of my city, I walk with the awareness of the shattered cities beyond number. When I think of peace, 1 can know no peace until the peace is real. My dedication, therefore, is to the cause of man in the attainment of that which is within the reach of man. In this way do I affirm faith in life and life in faith. Norman Cousins TO DADDY ON HIS BIRTHDAY THIS MEANS TO ME Brooding beauty breathes to me Of heady hope and mystery, Of the silken sadness in a rose, Of surrender that brings victory. To me an echo softly spun Reminds me of a life that’s won, That’s safe with God eternally, Of sinner and Saviour now in One. Bewitching btcbbles in the air Brings to mind the things most fair, Security for eternity And the richest life one lived in prayer. All life’s sorrow and her pain Call to me from One once lain To death so we could take of life, To teach us the strain of Love’s refrain. EMŐKE PETRI
