A PROCLAMATION By the Commissioners of District of Columbia “RELIGIOUS EMPHASIS MONTH” WHEREAS, Churches and synagogues in our community, and throughout the land, are deeply cherished symbols of an American heritage; and WHEREAS, They remind all of us that this is a Nation under God where freedom of worship is the inalienable right of all men. It is guaranteed by the Constitution and has been jealously guarded by succeeding generations; and WHEREAS, The American character, with concern for moral and ethical principles, human dignity and peace with justice, has been built upon the rocle of religious precepts and must be sustained as a bulwark of our national life in these times when fidelity to American ideals is tested again and again; and WHEREAS, Religion in American life reminds us that those of religious faith need not walk alone. In public worship in church or temple, they may seek Divine guidance for themselves, their families, the community and the Nation. They may give thanks for the heritage of freedom and the extraordinary blessings with which this Nation and people are endowed; NOW, THEREFORE, WE, THE COMMISSIONERS OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, do hereby proclaim November, 1962, as a month in which we focus attention on the values of our spiritual life, and urge all families to attend worship services that their Faith may be strengthened; and this Nation truly become a Nation under God.
