16 FRATERNITY INTERESTING AND AMUSING STATISTICS ONE VOTE CLINCHED IT Many elections have turned on one vote per precinct. Here are two examples: less than one vote per precinct in the State of California in 1916 lost the Presidency for Charles Evans Hughes in the upset that put Woodrow Wilson in the White House. Thirty-two years later, California was lost to Thomas E. Dewey by approximately one vote per precinct. Elections are decided by the total votes cast in all precincts, and a few minority votes cast in one precinct may be the margin of victory when they are added to majorities gained in other precincts. GOOD DAY FOR A MURDER Weather conditions may have something to do with the crime problem. According to a recent piece in Popular Science, murder, rape and aggravated assault increase by a third when days are dreary and muggy. When the weather turns seasonable, the air dry and crisp, the crime rate goes down as much as 75% below average. THE INCOMPLETE ANGLER A lively 75-year-old gentleman who is president of the Maidon (Essex) Angling Club in England has made a startling confession. After thirty years of fishing he admits that he has “never caught a fish.” His lifetime record stands rather ignominiously at three eels. AMERICANS ON THE MOVE Each year approximately one out of every five persons in the U. S civilian population changes his place of residence. About 67% of those who move change residence within the same county; 33% move from one county to another, and 17% move to another state. HOW MANY PENCILS IN A TREE? A single cedar tree from the vast timber belt of Oregon and northern California provides enough wood for 300,000 pencils, according to the Lead Pencil Manufacturers Association. PILLSHOOTERS VERSUS SIX-SHOOTERS It seems that science is taking all the romance out of the Far West. Our disillusionment is caused by the news account of the cowboy who captures wild horses, not with lariat, but with tranquilizers -— if you please. A gas powered dart gun hits the broncos with special pellets and the tranquilized beasts mildly submit to capture. As practical as this may be, we don’t think Miltcwn will ever replace the rope in TV Westerns.
