8 FRATERNITY WHAT EVERY PARENT SHOULD KNOW ABOUT MOTION PICTURES Among teenagers, going to the movies is the popular way to emjoy a date or go out with a group of friends for an evening. As a good parent, it’s just as wise for you to know what’s playing at the movie theatre as it is to know whom your children are dating. How well do you fulfill this obligation as a parent? What is your motion picture IQ? Some parents may ask: How can I know what’s playing at the local movie theatre? If I did know the name of the picture, how could I tell if this particular film was suitable for my children? These are sensible and proper questions. The answers aren’t hard to find. There are many sources of information available to parents about films. Today, newspapers carry reviews on most of the current pictures playing in your area. Parents Magazine lists reviews and indicates suitability for various age groups. The Parent-Teachers Magazine offers a similar service. Catholic families can refer to the National Legion of Decency ratings which are posted in the vestibules of most Catholic churches. The Protestant Motion Picture Council also does advance reviewing of films. Consumers Bulletin, Cue Magazine and most of the women’s magazines publish thumb-nail reviews that can serve as reliable guides.
