2 FRATERNITY FIRST SHOT General Mark W. Clark, president of The Citadel, spots the action of firing the first shot of the Civil War. The mural, first of a series of eight to hang in the school's new library and museum building, shows cadets from The Citadel sending cannon ball whizzing across bow of the Federal ship "Star of the West", which was attempting to supply the North's garrison at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The firing was on January 9, 1861, three months before the attack on Fort Sumter, which actually touched off the five-year conflict.
