4 FRATERNITY slough off duties, responsibilities and opportunities. Tell yourself you get only one chance. (5) The more you put into your school life at all levels, the more aware of things you will be and the more hope you will have for leading a full and rewarding life. ★ ★ ★ Inventions, especially our own “brilliant” ones, have always seemed to be a real road to hurry-up success. But don’t count on that brilliant one of yours making you King Midas overnight. Contrary to common belief, inventions are rarely popularized overnight. Analyzing about 20 inventions that appeared between 1888 and 1913, one authority found that the elapsed time from patenting to subsequent success totalled about 35 years. Two latter day examples are herewith offered as being indicative: (1) The zipper was originally patented in 1893 but did not gain widespread utilization until the 1930’s. (2) A “telegraphone” company was organized around 1912 but had to wait until the 1940’s to be accepted as the modern magnetic wire recorder. So . . . get busy, apply for that patent and start making a name for yourself! ★ ★ ★ The LAJOS KOSSUTH “Champion of Liberty” (U. S.A.) stamps (4c and 8c) were issued September 1958 and are still available for use on your mailings. We earnestly plead with our readers to use these stamps for their Christmas mailings. Let’s keep KOSSUTH alive! ★ ★ ★ FELLOWSHIPS. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is offering a limited number of advanced research fellowships for study during 1960-61 in one of the 14 member states. Applications should be submitted no later than December 1 to the Conference Board of Associated Research Council, Committee on International Exchange of Persons, 2101 Constitution Avenue.
