2 FRATERNITY But strong — able to stand up and to face life — or death — firm in conviction, steadfast in belief. To endure. Not a flash heroism of the moment, but ability to carry on and through. The quiet courage that has its base in faith — in the consciousness of God, in an understanding that He is good, in an acceptance of the fact that we are never tested beyond our strength. Strong to endure —- the greatest heroes of the world were men able to bear both failure and victory. Washington and Lincoln both had this quality and their fame will outlast the Napoleons and Hitlers of any age. I do not include the Soviet tyrants because, misbegotten as they were, both Napoleon and Hitler were builders of empire, whereas the Russian rulers only undermined and honeycombed for destruction. Strong to endure — able to face the truth even though it might be unpalatable; never to falter even though the road be hard; ready to go ahead even through seemingly unsurmount able obstacles; constant in the way of righteousness. The coming year will bring many problems to be faced and difficulties to be encountered — may we as individuals and as a nation be strong to endure!
