ESZENYI, Auditor CAN I CHANGE MY NAME WHEN NATURALIZED? Question: I shall soon be eligible to apply for my naturalization. When I arrived in the United States, I Americanized my name and am now generally known by my Americanized name, which is much easier to spell and to pronounce than my original name. I have never taken steps to change names officially. Is it possible for me to obtain a certificate of citizenship with my new name? Answer: Yes. The naturalization law provides for just such a possibility. You should request the new name in connection with your application for naturalization. When your case comes up for final hearing, the judge can order that your name be changed as requested. Your certificate of naturalization will then be issued under the new name.
